Ricky Gervais pissed off a lot of humorless celebrities when he hosted the Golden Globes last year. Meanwhile, he managed to give audiences something to cheer about with his irreverent roasting of practically everyone in the room. Currently Gervais is in talks to resume his Golden Globe hosting duties this year and, with Eddie Murphy abandoning his Oscar host gig, Gervais has set his sights on that stuffy award show as well. He is reportedly so keen on hosting both events that he's said in an interview that he will knock 20% off his fee as a package deal. Will Gervais somehow land this historic twofer?
In the wake of Murphy's departure, which apparently was a reaction to his 'Tower Heist' director Brett Ratner stepping down as Oscar producer in light of derogatory comments he made about the gay community, the buzz surrounding who will be the new host has reached a fever pitch. It may well be the most people have paid attention to the Oscars prior to the nominees being announced. There is even a push on both Facebook and Twitter to have the ceremony presided over by the Muppets. Given that ABC is broadcasting the Oscars and they also own Disney who will be releasing its new Muppet movie this month, this is not outside the realm of possibility. I think either choice, Gervais or Muppets, is suitable for giving the Oscars a fresh change of pace to help take the overwhelming pretension out of the evening.
What do you guys think? Would you like to see Gervais host the Oscars? What about the Muppets?

Comment by matenzo on November 11, 2011 at 3:59am @MavenCree haha great idea. I'd actually watch that. I second Neil Patrick Harris.
Comment by The Host on November 11, 2011 at 3:04am Billy Crystal's hosting the Oscars next year.
Comment by Dredd on November 11, 2011 at 12:40am After watching all those tasteless parody trailers of the upcoming Muppets movie I have to admit that I've had more than enough of those characters for this year (thank you very much). Having Gervais hosting the show would be great. The Oscars feel too much like some kind of crusty school reunion for the Class of '56 these days. Gervais would turn it into a wedding reception in which you expect the drunken best man to say something incredibly awkward and make the whole night worthwhile by give the people in the room a good story to recount to others for years to come.
Comment by MavenCree on November 10, 2011 at 9:30pm If they want to save the oscars, they need to offer Neil Patrick Harris the job.

No.....don't like the guy. Maybe it would be ok if they let Korey go on stage and throw a chair at him for stealing his ideas.

Yeahhhh just heard that Billy Crystal will be hosting the next Oscars...
As much as I would love to see The Muppets to host, I always love Billy Crystal as the Oscar host and he has some of the best and most entertaining Oscar performances ever aired on TV. So looking forward to it!
Comment by Jordan Hoffman on November 10, 2011 at 5:30pm I'm good with either.
I actually probably won't be watching unless something really grabs my interest.
