So, after venturing into Coventry to feed my unnatural interest into the zombie genre, I picked up the first Resident Evil film for about £3 along with 28 weeks later. I took Resident Evil home and sat down to watch the 90 or so minutes of film.

I must start by saying that as far as Resident Evil is concerned I am a massive (excuse the language here) “whore” for all the games, I own roughly all the games that were released, some are better than others it has to be said but I really do enjoy playing all the games and find the challenging as well as fun. I am looking forward to the new Resident Evil game to continue my love of zombie killing.

When it comes to the movies however, I will not stand by and let Hollywood ruin one of my favorite game franchises. I have seen the first Resident Evil film and that was many years ago when I was but a young lad. The first time I saw it I liked it, but I couldn’t explain why. After watching it a second time now that I have the media knowledge to analyze such films I can safely say that this is a complete bashing of a game I loved.

For starters, the setting is completely wrong, not only have the film makers changed the locations but also the motivations of the characters. The setting is a mansion still like the first game, but it houses a secret entrance to an underground facility where Umbrella has been developing a new kind of viral weapon, the mansion is used as a security hub for our main character Alice. After someone releases the T-virus in the underground facility called The Hive, a team is sent in to find out what happened down there and why the security system went homicidal. They soon realize why security killed everyone down in the Hive.

Gone are the main characters from the game which were Chris Redfield and Jill valentine, and gone is the plot about grizzly murders near an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of raccoon city where the Raccoon city police unit S.T.A.R.S are sent in to investigate. What we get instead is a underdeveloped plot and a mess of a main character in Alice, played by that one from The Fifth element. She is a non-existent blob and holds as much charisma as a plank of wood.

What was a pretty scary game the first time around has now been turned into a brainless action film with no scares at all and laughable dialogue in which Michael Bay would be proud, this indeed cements my position that Paul W.S Anderson cannot make a good film, yes Event Horizon was OK but then again he didn’t write that.

What was I expecting though, a faithful re invention of the game when so many other game-Movie tie ins fail. Even so, I was still expecting hordes of zombies being blown up, shot, stabbed and maimed in the name of fun brainless cinema. But the film takes so long to get anywhere explaining a plot that no one actually cares about that there is no time to actually get to some zombie killing, which I was thoroughly disappointed at. An hour through you get the first bit of shooting which for a brainless action film is too long to get to any real action. But hey what was I actually expecting, something better. I regret to inform that I was.

on another note the music score completely overpowers the dialogue that you can’t hear anything. and the edit is mashed together for a quick buck, which is what all game-movie ties are trying to do, get rich quick. Though they had from 1995 – 2002 to actually come up with a decent plot. Hollywood, you ruin yet another of my childhood joys.
