Empire announced that actor
Jeremy Renner may well be the man to play Hawkeye.
When asked about
The Avengers, Renner said:
“I don’t know if I’d be right for Captain America. I met with the Marvel guys, actually, but we didn’t talk about Captain America. But one of the writers, Zak Penn, we’ve become friends over time and he was thinking maybe Hawkeye could be interesting. He sounds like an interesting character.”
As to whether or not Hawkeye will show up in
The Avengers or
Thor, the actor says,
“If I was a betting man, I would bet that Hawkeye would probably show up in Thor, and then be in The Avengers. But do I know for sure? I can’t say. But I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun.”
But let’s sound a note of caution: it’s by no means confirmed that Renner will actually turn out to be Hawkeye. He confirmed, saying,
“No offer has been made. I think there’s a little ways from that.”
UPDATE: Renner told
Superhero Hype! exclusively that there still is a possibility of him playing the character:
I haven't heard anything since I talked to them three weeks ago. The last I knew is that they still have to find their director for The Avengers, that's where he's really going to show up. They were just talking, 'Like maybe we should consider maybe hiring Hawkeye now' but there's no director on Avengers so they don't really want to force-feed the director, 'Here's the whole cast.' It's a big role so they didn't want to do that to the director, so I think they might wait. I know they're interested, I'm interested, so we'll see if it works out.
The actor also said that regardless of who's going to play the character, Hawkeye is going to get a serious makeover,
"... it's not going to be the guy with the big purple (mask), it's not going to be a guy in tights. It's going to be a guy in sunglasses and a vest."
