Comment by Juan on May 5, 2012 at 11:53am Left you cold? Well I guess the movie did what it was suppose to do. Seems like it just didn't carry over for you. Which is strange because it was such a powerful film, and I think you have to care about the character he doesn't like who he is. He wants to just hide, and his sister is the opposite.
Eh I guess it reminded me for Requiem for a Dream but put the spotlight on a much different addiction
And if you listened to what I said, you'd get that I understand the type of film it is, and that I disagree that it didn't need a story because for a character based piece like this to be interesting, you have to care what happens to the character in question, and I most certainly did not care. Perhaps it depends on the audience being able to project emotions from having known someone else with addiction problems. I don't know. But it left me cold and it had nothing to do with me not understanding what it was trying to do.
Comment by Juan on May 5, 2012 at 2:32am Also by the end of the film the reason it was so powerful because he was finally starting to care for someone. Which was his sister. I think the sister relationship in the film was the story you were looking for. Maybe it needed to be more out there for you but it was there. Very subtle, because the people in the film aren't over the top they are quiet, real, and a little messed up
Comment by Juan on May 5, 2012 at 2:28am Yeah I went at you the wrong way. I am sorry for that Cyrus, but I do still think you missed the whole point. You wanted a story when really there isn't a story. It's the guys life, and how he deals with his addiction. I know that might not be enough for you, but you are pointing out things that the film didn't need to have. It's like me hating on a movie for not having enough of something that really isn't needed. That's why I said you "missed the whole point" Shame really reminds me of a film that a lot of people missed out on because they simply weren't yet ready for that kind of a film. You also ignore the amazing acting, score, and directing this film has. Also all those intro shots with the guys dick didn't feel out of place. It was more of setting the mood for the film. Shame didn't try to sugar coat anything. It was pure filmmaking.
Comment by Luke Mullen on May 4, 2012 at 3:48pm @Joseph Trochez cheers, man, thanks for listening
The entire masthead spill crew didn't really dig on Shame, for the record. And it's just not accurate to say, "I guess he just doesn't understand the whole point" when criticizing someone else for liking something you didn't. That's a sizable assumption to make. Alternately and more accurately, I got the point, and still didn't find it to be worthwhile. At least not to my tastes. Way the world works.
Comment by Juan on May 4, 2012 at 10:03am Man Cyrus missed the whole point of Shame lol. Well I guess he just doesn't understand the whole point. I guess he needs things blowing up to like lol. Our a billion lame jokes. Shame was my favorite film last year
