This is my 1st blog ever so i thought I'd start off with something that has been bothering me recently and it would be nice to hear other people's thoughts on this.

So the other day we and friend went to see Rise of the planet of the apes (which far too long of a title for a movie, I feel tired just thinking about that title) and although I thought it was personally an average film (if I had to rate it I'd give it a rental) there were loads of nods and qoutes taken from the original film.

Now I didn't mind some of these nods to planet of the apes (e.g Cesar is seen fixing a model of the statue of liberty) but I felt over a while it was just getting silly to point where they take two of the most famous lines from the original and place it in this film and it just feels awkward.

But it's not just rise of the apes that does this, recently other films such as Terminator 4 did this dropping all the famous lines we know from the original into that film and again coming off as awkward. The Star Wars prequels used so much stuff from the originals it's overwhelming! Superman returns had some elements like this. The film Predators has way too many stuff taken from predator even the song for credits which in the film's own logic doesn't even make sense. Even these horror remakes we have now will have moments and lines that go "hey remember this from the original? Well we've put it in here for the remake so its just as good ok?" no not ok if you keep taking stuff from the original source then it doesn't become a remake or a sequel instead it just feels more like a tribute film and personally I'd say we don't need tribute films.

But I'm rambling on a bit

my point is that these sequels they make from original films, they have potential if they become their own movies. And although rise of the apes didn't have as many nods as some other sequels the ones it did have did pull me out of the movie. I'm slightly concerned that Hollywood will never learn this and now we've got an up-coming sequel to THE THING titled THE THING..... and I can pretty much predict what it's gonna be like and its a shame cos the its one of my favorite horror films.

Whooo ok rant over :) but tell me what you guys think about this subject
