Relativity's 'Snow White' Fires Back Against Universal

Source: Deadline

Like two fratboys arguing over whose wang is larger, Relativity Media and Universal Pictures have been fighting tooth-and-nail for months now, pitting their two Snow White projects against each other. Relativity's entry - 'The Brothers Grimm: Snow White' directed by Tarsem Singh, starring Armie Hammer, Lily Collins, and Julia Roberts in a dark twist on the classic tale - has been dueling against Universal's film 'Snow White and the Huntsman' featuring Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Stewart, and Charlize Theron in an empowerment tale about Snow White training to take out the evil Queen with help from the Huntsman sent to kill her. In a bold move, Universal recently moved the release date for 'Huntsman' up from December, 2012 to June 1st, putting it in theaters almost a full month before Relativity's film. That wasn't the end of this battle, however...

News is out today that Relativity has struck back and in a big way. Not only have they moved their film up to March 16th, 2012 (putting it ahead of Universal's film once again), but they've also announced casting for their entire roster of dwarves: Mark Povinelli, Danny Woodburn, Jordan Prentice, Sebastian Saraceno, Martin Klebba, Joey Gnoffo, and Ronald Lee Clark. Basically, they're just one Peter Dinklage shy of cornering the market on dwarf actors. While it's possible for actors to appear in more than one film, you had better believe that Relativity added a "no-compete" clause to their contracts.

Then, as if that wasn't enough, they also decided to play a little dirty pool and shuffle a few of their films into direct competition against Universal projects. Relativity announced that the newest Nicholas Sparks adaptation 'Safe Haven' has been rescheduled to premiere on June 1st (the same day as the 'Huntsman' premiere), which cuts heavily into the coveted female demographic both films are skewed towards. They also moved the Philip Noyce-helmed action movie 'Hunter Killer' into direct competition with Universal's untitled Judd Apatow comedy on December 21st, 2012.

However, all this schoolboy fighting may backfire given that both studios have now drastically cut short the production time for their films. In addition, Relativity may have their Snow White in theaters ten weeks before Universal, but they also risk cutting their total box office by opening their film a week before Lionsgate premieres their highly anticipated adaptation of 'The Hunger Games'. How much dirtier is this fight going to get? Universal may not have the ability to scoot their project any further forward than it already is, but they also don't want to risk becoming Relativity's sloppy seconds. With the action heating up on both sides, only time will tell who will be the eventual victor between these two studios.

I hope The brother's grim: snow white does good.

It's directed by Tarsem who did "The Fall"

I feel like this sort of thing is always going on.

Just clone 7 of these guys like Burton did in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Surely Tim has a couple of them still lying around his house in need of some work.

You never know who writes these.  Is it really the Spill crew or some guy working for Hollywood.com.  As a writer myself I think that every time something is published, even on the net, you should know who is saying what, even if it's just screen name, like mine MisterKeitel.  That way if you've got a question or a comment or a problem you can address it to the right person.  Just a thought.

I have the Disney classic on Blu-Ray, so I really couldn't care less if both films end up sucking

A fight...over who can produce a SNOW WHITE FILM FASTER?!?

Take a look at Red Riding Hood, girls. Maybe you should check to see if the public even gives a shit about a live action version first...

To Relativity and Unviersal: "Girls, girls, you're both pretty! Can I go home now?"

I don't know what's worse the Oz or the Snow White adapts/remakes/reimaginings, etc.
