The Caped Crusader Will Be Re-Invented Within A Year After 'The Dark Knight Rises'
Warner Bros. plans to reboot the franchise after 'The Dark Knight Rises' for a 'Justice League' film. They also plan to use a new Super-Man...NOT the one in the upcoming 'Man of Steel' project.
I'm sure several of you are aware of Warner Bros. plans to reboot Batman after The Dark Knight Rises. While many fans have been generating mixed feelings over the news, I've taken it as a personal punch to the face. This crazy and brass decision is not only poor, but it also effects the excitement and enthusiasm I've had for Christopher Nolan's final film.
Firstly, I'm a crazy, demented, overly-obsessive Batman fanatic. Since my younger years, I've been consumed and pre-occupied with everything Batman. From the comics, to the films, to the toys, to the animated series. I'm overly passionate about the character and to this day I still collect Batman comics and graphic novels. Secondly, I'm a crazy Christopher Nolan fan. I consider him to be one of Hollywood's most unique and ballsy directors. He doesn't proceed with a film until he has a good premise and solid characters. I've seen all of his work: everything from Following to Inception.
What I'm basically trying to say can be put into a mathematical formula: Batman + Nolan = Film Orgasm
Reports have been coming out stating that Warner Bros. wants to re-invent Batman, just in time for their Justice League project, which has plans for a 2013 release....wait, what?! So I'm supposed to get excited for an intense Batman finale, when you're just going to re-invent the character a year later?
Part of what makes The Dark Knight Rises a great oppurtunity is the fact that it concludes Nolan's story. Instead of viewing the franchise as stand-alone sequels, Nolan came to the realization that he is telling one massive story, and this is the Third Act. He knows he has to go out with a bang, but most importantly he knows the importance of a conclusion. He needs resolution for all of the characters he's introduced, and that's what he plans to do with The Dark Knight Rises. The film will be very emotional plot-wise, but it's also been emotional for hard-core fans who were under the impression this is the grand-finale. I have been gearing up for this film knowing its the end for this specific franchise, but hearing that Warner Bros. is reinventing the Dark Knight within a year and a half sort of kills the buzz a little bit.
Also, when you look at their plans, it makes no sense time-wise. You're releasing The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, and want a NEW Batman AND Justice League film for 2013? Warner Bros. claims a script is in the works and that a Justice League film is their top priority. To add more B.S. to the mix, they're not even using the Superman character that will be seen in the upcoming Man of Steel film. That's right, we're also getting a new Superman, which makes the upcoming film sort of pointless. Hell, are they also going to re-invent Green-Lantern too?! Finally, they claim Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas will stick around to produce the new Batman franchise (knowing Nolan's M.O. I highly doubt he will stick around for this).
Warner Bros. claims this is the end for the current 'era' of super-hero films they're putting out. I guess their tired of the realistic tone used in comic-book films since it limits the villains and stories they can use (even though the realism and human emotion has given them some of the best material in years). Don't get me wrong: I'm all for a Batman re-boot...but not until YEARS down the line. We're just finishing up an amazing Batman story, and you're going to start all over again just as it ends? Furthermore, I can't see Justice League translating well on the big-screen at all. Too many costumes, too many different characters, too many different tones...it will be a nightmare (just like The Avengers).
I hope Warner Bros. takes a good look at what they're doing. They can release quality material and still bank on it, or they can make crap and bank on it...I guess it doesn't matter to them either way.

Comment by Gift of the Magi on April 7, 2011 at 1:24am @Don, it's isn't an 'American' love of trilogies, it's Hollywood's love. Personally I agree with you in most cases that a story can be better wrapped up in one or two films rather than stretch it out to three. I think it has to do with building the name of the overall story, the same with book trilogies from where this got started (seriously, damned near every fantasy series I pick up is a trilogy or more.) It sells, so they're gonna keep doing it. Oh and you MIGHT want to remember that Tolkien was British, not American...and that Bond and Potter films make trilogies look tame.
Ok, back to this thread...well done, but you HAD to see this coming. The Era of the Reboot is well under way, and the time between films is closing fast. Thanks to this world of instant access to entertainment and information, the general population no longer has the patience it once had. They want it and want it NOW. So no, not surprised to see a new trilogy coming...and I have no doubt it will be more 'superhero'-like and kid-friendly...because they'll want to sell it to kids (honestly, if you let your 8 year old kid watch TDK, you should be beated publicly).
Get used to it, people. The fanbase no longer matters to film makers, who now feel they can take any stroy and do ANYTHING they want to it. Nolan actually HELPED this idea by creating a non-comics Batman so realistic it was BARELY tied to the comics save by names. It was wildly successful, so now studios believe the the source is no longer necessary (see the Wonder Woman TV series coming up) to use the franchise. Add to this the near-complete apathy people have to 'fan boys', the people who love the source material and grade films on how well they honor said material. Today, such fans are portrayed as semi-psychotic nutjobs that rant and scream over the tiniest details. While this MAY be true about a tiny portion of the fans, it's not true of the entire base. However, thanks to this viewpoint ( thank you, fuck you Rubio), any complaints to the system gets put under 'fanboy rants'...which would include this thread.
I hate to say this, I really do...but Nolan is helping this along. He's the producer of the next trilogy of Batman films, and as such he's helping the system continue the rapid reboot-and-remake machine to constant shove the same story down your throat over and over...while you fork over your cash. We have Daredevil and Fantastic Four reboots coming, TWO Oz films back to back and a completely unnecessary series of Avatar films (trilogy, of course). It's all about money, using an established franchise to generate cash with a minimum of development while silencing any possible critics. And we're helping.

Comment by SomeBritishDude on April 2, 2011 at 6:34pm I seriously doubt this shit is going to happen anyway...but then again, I agreed with Leon about the Avengers not too long ago.

Spice it up with an anti-military theme and it is a James Cameron movie. ;)
Michael Keaton as old Bruce Wayne would be awesome.
Comment by CHEEZYSPAM on April 1, 2011 at 12:52pm @Cthulhu R'lyeh, doubtful Cameron would ever agree to do something like that. It's not his kinda of film or character.
In regards to you earlier post about having more outlandish characters... I think Batman Beyond would be a great way to showcase something like that. Take Mr. Freeze's story arch from the cartoon.
I'd like to see an old Bruce tutoring a hi-tech new age Batman in live action.
NOTE: This will never happen.

Maybe get James Cameron to do it? Isnt Terminator considered a neo-tech thriller or something?
Comment by Palmer on April 1, 2011 at 10:25am While I appreciate your dedication to the protector of Gotham, you really need to get your information straight before you write up a post like this. The "Batman" reboot won't be coming out in 2013, only "The Justice League" will. The reboot (like Caleb said below) probably won't be out until 2015, AT LEAST.
And I'm sorry, but I have to ask...why the hell is everyone so surprised about this? Warner Bros. specifically stated, about a year ago, that their intent was to start pushing out loads of DC flicks soon as the "Harry Potter" franchise (their biggest moneymaker) came to an end. Having alternating franchises is actually the perfect way to do this (from a business stand-point, not story wise), not to mention this isn't the first time they've talked about doing a "Justice League" flick without the actors who play the characters in the respective franchises. George Miller was going to direct, with Armmie Hammer as Batman, and Common as the Green Lantern.
But look; it's a comic book movie. I'm sure there are currently two separate Batman/Spider-Man/Superman/whatever comic series running simultaneously, at least. How come they can do that with comic books, and not movies? I mean sure; it mean's you'll have to be a bit more informed about the upcoming slate of films...but if you're such a hardcore fan as you proclaim yourself, that shouldn't be a problem for you.
