Spider-Man 4 has been cancelled, Sam Raimi pulled out and so the film is dead. In it's place is a re-boot where peter parker will be in high school. That is we know at this point so I'm going to dissect this:
First off I give a thumbs up to Sam Raimi, honestly, way to not go for the money. I do wish I could have seen you make up for fucking up Venom though...
Now let's look at what this means for the millions, and the millions of Spidey fans out there. I currently have no idea who they're gonna cast but I pray to God, hell I'd pray to Lucifer that they don't cast someone like Zac Efron. I have nothing against him but he is way to pretty to play Spidey. Tobey Maguire deserves some serious kudos for his nearly spot on portrayal of the web slinger. However I didn't buy Kirsten Dunst as MJ one bit. She didn't look the part and was nowhere near as sassy as MJ needs to be. Again no idea who would make a good MJ and I won't even guess cause I wasn't convinced Heath Ledger would make a good Joker. I'm also really gonna miss James Franco as Harry Osborn, another spot-on performance. The point is we need new, young actors and I really don't want them to go with the trendy disney type actors, it would really just sink the movie. This could be good or really terrible.
Casting aside, let's look at the story itself and by story I mean who the villain will be. I really hope they don't redo someone they've already done. I have recently read the first few issues of Spider-Man and I mean the first few issues. There are tons of great villains that can be done but maybe they should go the Batman Begins/Sherlock Holmes route and start off with someone less known. Hmmm Tombstone, or Kraven could possibly work. They could go the Ultimate Spider-Man route, which is what I'm kind of thinking their planning on doing. Kraven would be a sweet villain and would make for a pretty good story. This is pretty good at the end of the day for one reason:
NO FUCKING VULTURE AND VULTURESS. Seriously there are enough great spider-man villains you don't need to make up a new one. The vulture is a decent character but the fights would be absolutely shit. Seriously go back and read the first few vulture stories. He's an old man, how do you fight an old man with wings?
I really think that if they did an Ultimate Spider-Man route it could work and would be something complete different than what Sam Raimi did. It would be a way to stay kind of faithful while still being different. It's a thin line and could work or piss people off. I'm going to say at this point the idea to bring Peter back to high school better not have to anything to do with the recent Brand New Day stories. Yes the current crop of stories are pretty good but if they pull out Mr. Negative in the next Spider-Man movie I will never see it. Fuck this could be kind of cool but they could really fuck it up.
Personally I think that they're gonna fuck it up, I don't know if it will be terrible but it will make Spider-Man 3 look like the Godfather. I say this for one reason, Sony owns the movie rights and therefore Marvel or Disney can't make really any choices. That is why Disney buying Marvel is awesome, it gives the marvel the money to put out their own movies like Iron Man. Unfortunately Sony only really cares about what they think will make a good Spider-Man, fuck I hope they prove me wrong and knock it out of the park.
