Real or Fake: Dragonball live action movie review No.1

Photobucket

Yea, about 2 month or so ago there was a review about this film. Every one thought it was fake but when the false slowly became true. Like: Piccolo being pale green, Goku's oozaru is more of a beast than a huge monster, the time limit and No perv Roshi. So, what do you guys think? 50% she is saying became true so far, and it was way before www.dbthemovie.com (Were you can get all the Dragonball film news) gave it out! So here's the fake or real review!

So I got a chance to see one of the first preview screenings of the new Dragonball movie. Obviously skeptical and slightly worried how my childhood favorites would be portrayed on the silver screen, I was delightfully surprised to find out that it wasn’t as bad as I expected. So heres my opinions:

- Some of the actors were slightly miscast, Chow Yun-Fat as Master Roshi was always going to be a bad idea. His perverted-ness is completely erased and frankly he feels like a modern Mister Miyagi. That said a few of the actors fit their roles perfectly, Emmy Rossum, James Marsters & Jamie Chung were awesome. I am still stuck for an opinion on Chatwin considering he portrays Goku in a different way from what I came to expect. I’ll get back to you on him.

- The special effects are amazing. Thats all that needs to be said about them really. Absolutely spectacular. They are not photo-realistic, but then again they were never supposed to be. I won’t spoil to much though!

- The script is flawed and at times feels very rushed but it fits I suppose. Ben Ramsey did a more than good job but as a true Dragonball fan I am never going to be completely satisfied. Characters such as Krillin could have easily been included and would have fit right at home within James Wong’s Dragonball and to be honest, I don’t know why they were omitted.

The movie will possibly garner lukewarm reviews upon release but a casual Dragonball fan will enjoy it’s fun, lively take on the myths. I for one recommend it & I can’t wait to see it again when it’s released next year!!

1. Hows the fighting

Spectacular at times. Other times it is fairly obvious that the fighters aren’t the Hollywood actors. Everything is done well, energy balls fly in all directions and surroundings are destroyed. Whats to be expected though, this is Dragonball?!

2. How green actually is Piccolo

Piccolo at the beginning, as his older-self is more pink than green. He changes about half an hour towards the end to his usual green. He looks very different from the cartoon in appearance. He lacks the usual white turban and purple jumpsuit. Plus his antenna are missing. This is beyond the point though because Marsters IS Piccolo, and the fact he plays the character so well means that his appearance really doesn’t matter.

3. Does he transform.

I think I pretty much answered this one.

4. How many fights are there

It depends how you refer to fights. There are lots on confrontations within the film but there are around four big fights in total. Two of which happen towards the end.

5. Whats the Oozaru look like

Oozaru is a beast in this film. Typically because of this been Hollywood he doesn’t kill Grandpa Gohan like in the original Dragonball series. That said, he does make Bulma crap her pants.

6. How long was it

93 Minutes Approx.

7. What rating will it be

Chances are a PG-13. The MPAA hasn’t rated it yet though. Note the fact I was at the FIRST preview screening.

8. Anything after the credits

Yes, only something tiny though. Goku flies off into the sunset.

9. Hows Shenron look

I don’t know how you expect me to describe these things but; a lot of the time he is glazed out by bright orange light, his face anyway. It is possibly one of the only designs that stays almost complete true to it’s anime form.

10. Whats the Goku vs Piccolo fight like

I’ve pretty much already described the fighting.

That 93 mins including credits?

No, it is not including credits.

How longs the school part of it.

The school part is towards the beginning and isn’t exactly a main plot point. I’m guessing it was just to show Goku as a normal young boy.

What are the 4 big fights.

Two fights between Goku & Piccolo. One ends in Piccolo’s favor the other in Goku’s. A fight between Goku and Yamcha and the earliest one, a fight between Goku and Master Roshi, this is when Goku first arrives at Roshi’s and the old man has no idea who he is.

The leaked Piccolo pictures we got is that the Young or Old Piccolo

The leaked pictures are of old Piccolo (obviously).

What’s the dialogue like? Any cheesy one-liners?

The dialogue was actually rather witty in a sense. There are some clever lines and Goku, although supposedly an educated teenager, still acts like the uneducated child he was in the original Dragonball series, maybe not as obviously though.

What’s the highschool scenes like? Is he the clichéd geeky student who discovers he has super powers?

No, he doesn’t discover he has the powers because Grandpa Gohan has already trained him slightly. The High School scenes only feature Goku as almost a freak show. Forced to fight a bully, demonstrating his power by lifting objects etc. Everyone knows of his power and in the high school scenes he isn’t afraid to show it.

Thanks to those who actually believe. Oh and I’m female by the way, for the person who keeps referring to me as ‘guy.’

Are the fights like the Matrix?

There are some bullet time style sequences but a lot of it is very similar to the series, fast paced, then slow bits in the middle which usually revolve around a character saying something.

How green actually is he like Pale green, dark green?

He is pale green.

Is it funny?

There are funny parts. The idea of Goku and Chichi had some of the audience giggling. Goku is oblivious to the fact that Chichi clearly fancies him, lots of distractions & confusion ensues.

Will fans enjoy it?

It depends what the fans are expecting. If the fans are expecting a perfect transition from the anime into Hollywood, then no, chances are they won’t like it. If they watch the film with an open mind and see that the actors, although sometimes don’t look like the Dragonball characters, they play them very well.

Do you think it'll be a big film?

With todays Box Office stature it is hard to tell. As I said earlier, chances are it will be met with lukewarm reviews but it is an enjoyable romp.

What special moves from the show appears?

Obviously Goku’s Kamehameha appears, along with Piccolo’s Makkankosapo, and Destructive Wave. Yamcha uses his Rogafufuken and Bulma uses her guns!

Is the Oozaru a tall ape like beast?

It’s not as huge as it was in the anime. It is almost werewolf in appearance but easily towers over characters such as Piccolo.

Does Yamcha wear a gi?

Yes, but he doesn't when we first meet him. In fact when we first meet him he looks nothing like Yamcha. This is when he saves Roshi, Goku and Bulma from a pit.

Does Roshi try to fight Piccolo?

Not exactly. He attempts to fight some of the Namek-Jins though.

Who all competes in the World Martial Art Tournament?

Goku, Mai, Chichi are the most notable characters. Lesser known characters competeting are; Jackie Chun, Giran, Bacterian, Nam & two others whose names I have forgotten.

How does Goku learn to fly?

He learns this with Roshi which is rather strange because in the show I believe he learnt how to fly from Kami. Kami was most likely omitted because the Nameks are portrayed as bad guys in this picture.

Is Kami in the movie?

I think I pretty much just answered your questions.

Any nods to other DB/DBZ characters?

Not really. Theres not really much to elaborate on this question.

Is capsule corp in the movie?

It is mentioned but the power of the capsules is toned down, for example they can't hold houses or anything, only minor, small objects.

Thanks for reading

EDIT:Oh, here's some more what she saying in a web site called www.dragonballmovieblog.net. She kind of say the same thing...Kind of!

If you’ve been following the blog in the past few days then you know about all the excitement regarding the IMDB user who goes by the name lovely_raindrops-1, who claims she saw an early screening of the film and went on to answer fan questions about it. Now, we here at DBMB are not saying she is legit or not. That is for you guys to decide for yourselves. I just thought it would be interesting to see what else she has to say. I will say, however, that it is a coincidence that she confirmed Roshi wouldn’t be much of a perv as well as the running time before they were posted both here and on dbthemovie.

Anyway, I chated for a bit with lovely_raindrops-1 and here is what she had to say:

DragonballMovieBlog: Can you describe Piccolo in detail to the best of your ability?

lovely_raindrops-1: Of course for anyone who has seen the leaked trailer images of Piccolo they will realize that it is a strong departure from the original anime/manga. In a way this was a bit of a disappointment because he lacks the usual white turban/cloak and purple gi. He now wears a full body suit that looks very similar to something that Batman would wear and has a white/pink face. Just to settle something that has been long disputed though, Piccolo does turn green. Obviously I can’t say too much on this but he does.

James Marsters is the epitome of Piccolo though. He fits into the role perfectly and in my opinion is one of the best cast actors in the movie.

DBMB: How close to the source material was the film?

LR: All the characters are there but anyone that has been closely following the progress of this film will realize that quite a few aspects have been severely changed. Goku is still the oblivious, child-like character, especially in his relationship with Chichi. Yet this is thrown into the inevitable, Hollywood, High School situation cliche.

The characters still have their special moves so everyone will get to see Goku release his Kamehameha and Piccolo, his Special Beam Cannon. Yet for realism based issues the idea of Capsule Corp has been severely dumbed down. The company still exists within the movie and the whole concept is there, yet the capsules don’t have to ability to hold houses etc.

With this all said and done I am still convinced that the majority of changes have been for the better. Who really wants to see a film when they know exactly what is going to happen & one that looks exactly like a comic book to boot? If they were going to stick exactly to the source material they may as well have just reanimated everything and stuck it into a feature length movie!

DBMB: Which actor best represented their character’s manga counterpart? (You mention Jamie Chung, Emmy Rossum and James Marsters before; can you elaborate a bit more on this?)

LR: As I said previously, James Marsters is fantastic as Piccolo. Although the makeup (as good as it is) doesn’t look like his anime counter-part I think that he just feels so right in the role.

Emmy Rossum is great as Bulma. She has clearly studied the character in which she has set out to play and conveys Bulma very well.

People were very skeptical about Justin Chatwin, me included, but I think that he does a very good job in the shoes of Goku. Just remember hardcore fans; these people were cast for a reason and in my opinion you have nothing to worry about as far as this goes.

DBMB: Have you read Ben Ramsey’s leaked first draft? If so were there elements of that script still in tact?

LR: If I’m honest, no I haven’t read Ben Ramsey’s leaked first draft. Ben Ramsey is a fantastic writer though and I personally think he did a good job with the final script. He managed to convey the world of Dragonball in a short space of time (93 Minutes), this alone deserves to be commended!

DBMB: How was master Roshi’s sense of humor?

LR: As you can imagine Yun-Fat Chow doesn’t really look very much like the anime Master Roshi. The character has been greatly changed within this picture and as everyone knows, the idea of him being an old pervert has been completely erased. Then again, who wants to see some old man asking a young girl to show him her pants? It wouldn’t look right on film.

Master Roshi still has his sense of humor intact and is quite similar to Mr Miyagi from the Karate Kid in the way that he acts. There are subtle hints to his other personality as well in the way that he openly flirts with Bulma.

DBMB: Who has the most screen time, and is there any character who you felt was underused?

LR: Obviously Goku has the most screen time within the film, followed by Bulma and Master Roshi. In all honesty I think that the character of Mai was slightly underused. Although she is explained as an ally of Piccolo’s there is not really much story behind all that like where she has come from etc etc.

DBMB: Does the film rely heavily on special effects? And were there any filters used to give the film a stylistic look (I.E 300, Underworld)?

LR: Around the first quarter of the film doesn’t feature many special effects but towards the end when energy balls are firing back and forth everything is very CGIed.

Around halfway through the film when Bulma and Goku are searching through temples etc, everything is given a very gritty, yellow appearance and looks rather stylistic. Other than filters the landscapes look very stylistic as well with huge brown boulders and fluffy cloud filled sky’s. Everything suits the whole style of Dragonball very well.

DBMB: Are the fights anything groundbreaking?

LR: Not exactly, when you watch them you can see elements of other films thrown in which is evidenced by a fight that features bullet time. Obviously this was bound to happen because the same fight coordinators worked on The Matrix! Other than that though the fights look very cool. Scenery gets completely demolished and some of the characters get battered about like ragdolls… PG-13 style.

DBMB: Describe the chemistry (if any) between Chatwin and Chung as well as Bulma and Yamcha.

LR: Chatwin and Chung, or should I say Goku and Chichi, work very well together. Goku is completely oblivious to the way that Chichi feels about him which leads to some hilarious exploits.

I wasn’t feeling it as much with Emmy Rossum and Joon Park though. Some of the lovey-dovey stuff seemed very comic, like in the anime/manga, but also quite forced. This is obviously just my personal preference but that sums up how I felt about their character’s relationship.

DBMB: Without giving any (more) spoilers, are there any surprises that us fans don’t know about yet?

LR: Oh yes, there are definitely a few surprises. Without saying to much, there are a few characters people did not expect to see who make small appearances. Also, there are clear references to the original manga/anime only the fans will pick up.

Overall, the film isn’t exactly a masterpiece and is flawed but the majority of fans that didn’t want to see the manga replicated in live-action will be more than happy. There will more than likely be a sequel because although all the loose ends are put together at the end of the film there are loads of hints that the story will obviously continue. The Dragonball saga of movies is just beginning and to be quite honest, I can’t wait to see the next one!

Thanks again to lovely_raindrops-1 for taking the time to chat with us.

To me, the movie is going to be not bad...Not great, but not bad. If the review is REAL! Oh, there are more reviews. I might post them out if you want!

^Well, is that the point for Dragonball? An enjoyable film just to watch an relax? That's how I see the film as well. Not a thinking movie, but a good to flick!

I'm sure it will be an enjoyable film to just sit back and turn off your brain for a while. At least that's what it sounds like it will be.

The trailer that everyone saw is not the real trailer. The real one is coming December. The trailer you guys just saw was just for an expro. They are still working on the special effects.

Hmm, I'm still skeptical. If the review is real than that teaser was just poor.
