Well, Variety is reporting that Ryan Reynolds has landed the job of Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern and I must say...I feel empty
I have been a fan of Ryan Reynolds since I saw him in Just Friends. I thought he was hilarious and after seeing some of his other works he actually became my top choice for Wally West aka The Flash.
But even though I am a fan, this recent news leaves me kind of uneasy for some reasons
1) Excitement?
I think the main reason why I'm somewhat disappointed with this choice is just the fact that there is nothing special about it. Nobody is worry or debating where Reynolds will be good in the role, which strangely is off putting to me. The great thing about hearing about certain casting choices are the debates they cause. Everyone is just saying Reynolds will do a good job, he's great, etc. and there is no excitement in that.
2) What Does it Mean for Deadpool?
Reynolds was attached to play Deadpool. Will this casting of him as Green Lantern affect this? I doubt that he could play the main hero in 2 competing comic book company films. Personally, I thought that Deadpool fitted Reynolds alot more. His acting style, his comedic timing just seemed to fit Deadpool like a glove. His brief appearance in XMO: Wolverine solidified the fact that he would be great in the role. He also seemed very passionate about being Deadpool.
"I will husk-fuck a herd of cattle to bring Wade Wilson to life as the real deal."
Too bad that might not be happening now. Hopefully Reynolds signed onto GL because the Deadpool project is no longer happening, not because WB/DC wrote him a big paycheck.
3) Uninspired/Star Vehicle?
The casting Reynolds made is seem more to me that the upcoming Green Lantern film has become a star vehicle. Which I can understand a studio wanting, but I think it just makes the movie more about the star than about the character (Hal Jordan) itself. It just seems WB is worried that GL won't sell because it's not Batman or Superman. That's why they cast such a "safe" choice.
All that being said, their were alot of worst choices out there. And with Martin Campbell, the main who revitalized the James Bond series twice directing along with a funny man like Ryan Reynolds; I'm sure that we will still have a great Green Lantern film on our hands.
