Because I got a new job at a movie theater, I can go see a lot of movies for free. Unfortunately, I have to deal with my summer reading (which was suddenly assigned to me HALFWAY THROUGH SUMMER!!!!!!), so I don't have enough time to review the movies I see. So without further ado, I give you 4 quickie reviews. (Not that anyone really cares).
THE PROPOSAL
Very shallow and formulaic, but so very funny. What makes this work is the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. They're onscreen spurting out insults that wouldn't be funny normally, but their line delivery is so perfect. Betty White was also very funny. If you can, try and see this with a crowd of people who just want a good time. MATINEE
MY SISTER'S KEEPER
The performances in this are really good, especially Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin, and I most likely am the only one who thinks this, but I think Cameron Diaz should be considered for an Oscar nomination. CONSIDERED! Those are really the only positive things I could say about this. The movie has a very unsteady pace. There's a scene at the beginning of the second act that triggers a flashback, and that flashback lasts FOREVER, while earlier flashbacks lasted only a few minutes tops. There's also an overabundance of slo-mo sequences of the family having fun together set to questionable music selections. And I didn't really have an emotional reaction to anything in the movie and I just left depressed. RENTAL
ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS
The 3D isn't that spectacular, but the animation is. The reason I loved the first was because of the Scrat sequences, and sadly, those have been replaced with sequences of him and "female Scrat" fighting over the nut, and it the cartooney factor reminiscent of the Wile E. Coyote cartoons is gone. The characters don't have that much development either, beside Buck, who is up there with Dug and Insectosaurus as my favorite CG characters of 2009. The voicework in this is actually quite disappointing. The only ones I feel were actually acting were John Leguizamo and Simon Pegg. RENTAL
TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN
After hearing many scathing reviews about this, I decided to disengage my brain while watching the movie. Thankfully, is somewhat worked. You've probably heard all of the controversy surrounding the numerous things this movie passes off as comedy. I found it pretty tolerable, but it still wasn't funny. The fight scenes weren't as bad as they were in the first film. The camera movements are no longer erratic and unwatchable. Despite the movie's 2 1/2 hour length, it flew right by (not as fast as The Dark Knight). And the last half hour was actually pretty badass. MATINEE
