Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus,' his return to the 'Alien' universe, was one of the most highly anticipated films of 2012. When it finally made its way to theaters, the reaction was...not ideal. Many found the plot holes in Damon Lindelof's screenplay to be insurmountable, and the film was not well received critically. However, the movie made over $300 million in total domestic/worldwide gross so many of us expected we'd be getting a sequel. Plus, the movie builds in such an obvious cliffhanger that it's clear the aim of the filmmakers was always to revisit the story. This speculation has now been confirmed as Fox has revealed that they are already pushing forward with the sequel alongside Scott. Apparently Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are already signed on to return. It appears Lindelof may be unavailable to pen the followup.

I feel like I was one of the few people who genuinely liked 'Prometheus.' Don't get me wrong, I don't disagree with any of the arguments made against it nor am I blind to its faults. However, I still loved the journey it took me on despite the bumps along the way. Plus, I'm such a sucker for 'Alien' mythology that I couldn't help but get wrapped up in the spectacle. I'm interested to see where the story goes next, but I understand if this piece of news doesn't conjure a din of enthusiasm from the Spill community. I will say I think it's probably the best thing possible for the sequel that Lindelof is unavailable. As much as I can forgive the knucklehead mistakes in his 'Prometheus' script, I would like to see a more solid, air-tight story in the next go round. I'm also glad Michael Fassbender is coming back as he was one of my favorite elements of 'Prometheus.'

What do you guys think? Anyone excited for another 'Prometheus' or has the first squandered all your enthusiasm?

I enjoyed Prometheus immensely. The world was very engrossing, enough for me to ignore a decent amount of the smaller plot holes. I think the reason that the movie didn't answer many questions was because they not only planned for a sequel but also wanted to make the audience think about those questions as well. I would agree that some of the writing was very sloppy but overall the movie took me on a great ride.

Despite the tardation I still enjoyed it and I am looking forward to the sequel, just to be another dumb popcorn flick. Nothing wrong with that really, I actually hope this inspires some future filmmakers to make hard sci-fi and horror movies with less reliance on CG. Don't get me wrong I actually enjoy CG in films but let's face it, CG still looks CG right now and when you compare the way Prometheus looked vs what has been released recently you have to admit that at least everything looked real...aside from that one guy turning into a zombie alien thingy, I just wasn't buying that for some reason.

Thank God there is a new writer. Damon Lindelof is a complete hack who wouldn't know how to write a good script if it hit him in the face. The problems with Prometheus are the same problems as Lindelof's run on Lost: answering jack shit. NOTHING in Prometheus made sense.  Even the premise of the film is a giant plot hole.

Example: The cave painting is giving directions to a weapons facility that won't be created for over 30,000 years.

I know Prometheus rated 73% on RT, but if you read through the 'fresh' comments by the critics a lot said "it was good, but..." meaning to me that the high rating was a bit generous.

For example:  "I wanted to love this movie, but just ended up liking it."

or   "Even though Scott visually dazzles us, the plot is a muddle.. has neither the thrill of Alien or the brilliance of Blade Runner".

and   "The good news is its the third best Alien movie.. the bad news is when you're better than Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, that's not much of a compliment".

So I guess to me the ratings are very mixed, even the good ones.  Maybe Scott should bring back Jonesy the cat, it might help him.

To say that Prometheus was not well received critically isn't fair. Reactions were mixed, but reviews were generally favorable.

Enthusiasm squandered.  In that posted interview with Kevin Smith, Lindelof stated that he was the one who diverted the story from being a prequel, so he was the one to fuck it up.  So, Lindelof, who wrote on Lost (bad ending), Cowboys and Aliens (bad overall), and Prometheus (really bad overall) is now going to be writing the Star Trek sequel and World War Z also?  Damn, that's depressing.

Is he like the Mark Millar of the movies; a guy who has some good ideas but can't deliver on a good, tight ending?

I enjoyed Prometheus, I liked how it took the Alien Universe onto a different direction and showing us other things that happened within that same Universe. So I look forward to the sequel. :)
