If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Randy Lander posted a statusSomebody told me that people are really into this newfangled Nintendo thingy. I hope they weren't wrong because today's conference at the GDC gave us enough new 3DS details to choke an Ocarina. Let's get started, shall we?
First and probably most importantly, Satoru Iwata announced a new Super Mario Brothers game is coming to the 3D handheld. Apparently this new entry into the epic plumber's saga is being created by the team responsible for Super Mario Galaxy. Outside of that, the details were a bit scarce. But if the screenshots below are any indication, it looks like another Mario 64-esque entry into the beloved franchise. The only other bit of information for us is that the the shadowy raccoon tail on the 'O' in Mario is definitely not just for show. According to Iwata we'll find out more at E3 this year.
Yep. That's Mario all right.
Next up we have some new non-game related details. Apparently the ever-popular and ridiculously useful Netflix Instant Streaming service will be available later this summer. As if that wasn't enough, it seems that Netflix is going to bring us 3D movies directly streamable to the 3DS. Finally! I can watch Avatar without those stupid glasses, and on a five inch screen no less! Even better, Nintendo is apparently set to offer it's customers free access to a series of AT&T Wireless hotspots located around the globe. This one is a little 'meh', but still, it's nice that Nintendo is trying to make their system at least a little bit more connectible, now if we can just lose the friend codes ...
As if all that wasn't enough, it appears that in addition to the Game Boy and Game Boy Color games that will be offered on the 3DS's online store, Nintendo is also going to start offering Game Gear and TurboGraphx-16 games for download. I'm not sure if this is really something that counts as a big get, as I've never heard of anyone who's been chomping at the bit for access to these systems' titles. Still, it'll be nice to play Columns and Bonk again, if only to remember why I stopped playing them before.
Finally, Nintendo released a new batch of screens from Ocarina of Time for the 3DS. You can check them out here but I have to say that the game looks like it's going to be a great. Being one of those blasphemous heathens who never owned a Nintendo 64, I'm looking forward to the opportunity to find out what all the fuss is about.
3D Epona! Whoo!
So what do you guys think? Does any of this tickle your fancy? Are you more excited now than you were five minutes ago?

Comment by Aleksander on March 3, 2011 at 3:26pm *Accelerometer and Gyroscope
*Music player and netflix
*Virtual Console
*Augmented Reality
*Higher resolution screens
*Superior hardware to the DS family. Objectively, it's as powerful as an Xbox. However, the 3DS sports advanced shaders, lighting effects and anti-aliasing that can produce visuals comparable to some 360 or PS3 games (see the Resident Evil:Revelations demo)
*Video steaming service
*Circle pad
*Mii's
*Larger game cart capacity (at launch the games can hold 2GB. Later on there will 8GB carts available)
Good enough for me
