So... I heard you guys liked that Dead Island Trailer. It was emotionally resonant and slickly produced, but what about the game it was advertising? Well, there have been a few other gameplay trailers, but this morning we were treated to a whopping eleven minutes with developer commentary. But you can put away your tissues, there's nothing here but pure, unadulterated zombie killin'.
So many zombies in bikinis. Rowr?
I think Techland has got our backs on this one ladies and germs. It seems as though this is a team that can crib from other games without the end result coming across like a cheap ripoff. That, combined with the attention to detail and opportunities to be a horrible jerk to people could very well make this the last big budget zombie game that I play for a while.
Why? Well because, quite frankly, I'm tired of zombies. Don't get me wrong, I love killin' me some a them there undeads, but it seems like nowadays every other game I play feels the need to shove a zombie mode, a zombie level, an unlockable zombie minigame, etc in my face. I like cake and all, but if you strapped me to a chair and shoved Black Forest into me for a week, I'm pretty sure my feelings would change.
At the end of the day, Dead Island looks like a good game and I can't wait to play it. But if you were to take out the zombies and replace them with space aliens, werewolves, or time traveling nazis, I think the cumulative effect would be about the same. What about you guys? Do the undead still turn turn your crank? Or are we all ready to put down the brains and move on?

Comment by Nick Kroboth (Herr Daimyo) on May 24, 2011 at 2:23pm Its supposed to have some comical elements, if it was all somber all the time they would alienate most of the audience. Personnaly im waiting for a good zombie type of RPG, like a survival day to day kind of thing.

Comment by John Lomax on May 23, 2011 at 10:43pm I really was not impressed with the gameplay at all. It doesnt seem like anything we have played before in terms of the combat mechanics. I think the ways to take down a zombie like dismemberment is cool but its no different from left for dead in my opinion. They are really just riding off of "open word" and i use that term loosely and the setting for the game not being some post apocolyptic world.
@metal vergin
If you are talking about graphically with as many environment pieces, terrain, lighting, and particle effects in any "open world" environment it is never going to look that good. game engines can only support so much to keep decent frame rate performance especially when cooked onto the xbox. If their were no limitations then every game would look like a feature film (depending on the studios artists abilities) as time goes on and hardware and software performance is enhanced then thats when you will have every prop, character and vfx looking as good as they do before all of the down rez that needs to go into to even let the game run at all.
I do hope the best for this game though, I am happy to see a studio try to put at least somewhat of a twist on the zombie genre with its unique setting. But who knows how this will really turn out, in the end they only thing that will really help is how well this game is marketed which from what I have seen has a lot of material to start a good campaign to do so.
