'Princess Bride' Author Interested In Creating Sequel
'The Princess Bride' is one of those perfect cinematic cocktails. It expertly blends a childhood fascination with fairy tales with more grownup comedic sensibilities and just a dash of storytelling self-awareness. It's a movie that holds up to every repeat viewing on the strength of its performances, its production design, and, not the least of which, its script. The screenplay was written by William Goldman, who also wrote the book on which the movie was based. Though the film is now twenty-five years old, Goldman recently made waves during a public appearance when he discussed his desire to write a followup story. Here's what he said...
"I’m desperate to make it and write it and I don’t know how. I would love to make it, more than anything else I’ve not written.”
This may not be Earth-shattering news, but it does inspire some interesting discussion. Goldman is a living legend in this industry. In addition to bringing us 'The Princess Bride,' Goldman also penned the script for 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' and 'All The President's Men.' However, the fact that even he's struggling to come up with a good idea for a 'Princess Bride' sequel further cements the fact that we don't need one. The 1987 film is sweet, funny, and entirely compartmentalized. The whole appeal of fairy tales is that the stories end with a satisfying "happily ever after." We are told everything we need to know in those three words. Not to mention the fact that so much of the spark of 'The Princess Bride' is rooted in its cast; some of whom are not with us anymore. To do another, it's just, it's...inconceivable. Alright, my two cents have been donated, now I open the floor to you guys.
Would you ever want to see a 'Princess Bride' sequel? Even if the original writer were involved? Where could the story possibly go?

Nope, no sequel. The Princess Bride is a great example of rare cinematic magic, and I just don't think it's possible to recreate that; especially when you set out intending to.

I would have wanted a sequel twenty something years ago but not now, that boat as sailed dude, let it go. I saw The Princess Bride on blu-ray the other day and just smiled because of the memories it brings me. I would refuse to watch this just like I'm refusing to watch the sequel to The Christmas Story.

No need for a sequel with the main cast, but they could do a Dread Pirate Roberts movie with a completely new character taking on the mantle. That way we could revisit the world, and if they keep the same wit and charm we get a great movie, and if it sucks, well it was just something that happened in the Princess bride world, but did not effect any of the main cast

I love this film...but no, no sequel. Part of the reason the film worked was the casting (the other half that it's so amazingly quotable.) it's been too long, and yet too close to our memories.

Although now I'm thinking, what about a Dread Pirate Roberts movie? How Westley adopted the persona and built his reputation. Granted it'd have to be a younger actor and probably not Elwes, but still.
