Predictions for the 2011 Academy Awards

Well it’s that time of the year again, Oscar time. It seems like nowadays no one can bring up the Oscars without ending it with “they don’t matter.” I tend to disagree. Yes, the Oscars are way to freaking long but they are the only crowning achievement that film really has. Film is subjective so obviously, your favorite film probably won’t win. SO WHAT! It’s still your favorite film. I love Oscar season and I love the Oscars, even if they aren’t always right. So without further ado I will give my opinion on this year’s Academy Awards starting with…….

Best Supporting Actress

Amy Adams in “The Fighter”

Helena Bonham Carter in “The King's Speech”

Melissa Leo in “The Fighter”

Hailee Steinfeld in “True Grit”

Jacki Weaver in “Animal Kingdom”

Who should have been nominated- Chloe Moretz in “Kick Ass”. I know it’s wishful thinking but this was to most bad ass movie character since………shit, ever! Chloe should have been nominated and one. “Little Miss Sunshine” ain’t got shit on this girl.

Who will win- Melissa Leo. Even though she recently burst on to the scene, Melissa Leo is an older actress. The Academy will pay her her due. Let’s face it; the Academy loves a trashy mom.

Who should win- Amy Adams (based on the ones nominated). Adams gave a much more layered performance and did a great job of taking a character that could have been one note and giving her some depth.

Best Supporting Actor

Christian Bale in “The Fighter”

John Hawkes in “Winter's Bone”

Jeremy Renner in “The Town”

Mark Ruffalo in “The Kids Are All Right”

Geoffrey Rush in “The King's Speech”

Who should have been nominated- Andrew Garfield in “The Social Network”. Garfield was really the heart of “The Social Network”. He did a fantastic job of portraying a person who did their best to always keep their composure until he lost it in the end. Garfield was totally snub.

Who will and should win- Christian Bale in “The Fighter”. It’s really hard to describe this performance without sounding over dramatic. This really was a rare performance. It’s one of those once in a lifetime roles.  This is a great category, but Bale crushes everyone.

Best Actress

Annette Bening in “The Kids Are All Right”

Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole”

Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter's Bone”

Natalie Portman in “Black Swan”

Michelle Williams in “Blue Valentine”

Who will and should win- Natalie Portman in “Black Swan.” It was a great year for performances and Portman’s performance may have been the best of the year. Portman takes a demented character and delivers it with such gusto that you feel an emotional connection. If anyone else wins, it will be a travesty.

Best Actor

Javier Bardem in “Biutiful”

Jeff Bridges in “True Grit”

Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network”

Colin Firth in “The King's Speech”

James Franco in “127 Hours”

Who will win- Colin Firth in “The King’s Speech”- Let’s face it; the Academy is dying to give this guy an Oscar.

Who should win- Jessie Eisenberg in “The Social Network”- Firth gave a fine performance, but I HATED his character from beginning to end. At the beginning of “The Social Network” I hated Eisenberg’s character. By the end though, I felt some sort of sympathy. You realized how lonely and socially strange Zuckerberg really was. It takes a great performance by someone for you to really feel sorry for an asshole.

Best Director

Who should have been nominated- Christopher Nolan for “Inception” and Danny Boyle for “127 Hours”. I was not a worshiper of “Inception like some are, but the film was incredibly well directed. They could have just nominated “The Dark Knight.” Boyle made a film about a guy who was stuck in a rock for two hours and made it fast paced. As much as I love “The Fighter”, the boxing scenes were rather uninspired; I would have bumped him and Tom Hooper for “The King’s Speech.”

Who will win- David Fincher for “The Social Network”- I can’t wait to see Fincher win. He should have won for “Fight Club” and “Seven” but he was not even nominated.

Who should win- Darren Aronofsky for “Black Swan”- When I have absolutely no idea what’s real in a movie and what’s not, dude you done good.

Best Picture

“Black Swan”

“The Fighter”

“Inception”

“The Kids Are All Right”

“The King's Speech”

“127 Hours”

“The Social Network”

 “Toy Story 3”

“True Grit”

“Winter's Bone"

What should have been nominated- Of all the Oscar type films, I would have liked to see “The Town” nominated. Besides that, I believe with the nominees.

What will win- I’ve seen eight of the ten nominees (Winter’s Bone and “The Kids Are Alright” being the only ones I didn’t see.) Of the nominated films that I saw, I thought “The King’s Speech” was by far the weakest. I enjoyed it quite a bit but there was nothing amazing about it. That being said, I think it will win.

What should win- Despite wishful thinking, I would cry if “Toy Story 3” were to win. That being said, I would be equally excited to see “The Social Network” win. Unlike “The King’s Speech”, “The Social Network” is a film that is actually relevant and historically accurate, and it’s just a freaking amazing film. Not to mention it has maybe the greatest script known to man.

So that’s it. Enjoy the show.
