'Precious' Director Lee Daniels In Talks To Helm Janis Joplin Biopic

Soon there will be at least one biopic for every famous person who ever lived, but one person whose life is long overdue for the cinematic treatment is rock legend Janis Joplin. For a while now, there has been talk of a biopic starring Amy Adams as the iconic singer, but the project has never been able to nail down a director. In fact, the project, titled 'Janis Joplin: Get It While You Can,' has gone through quite a few intriguing iterations. At one point Fernando Meirelles ('City of God') and Catherine Hardwicke ('Red Riding Hood') were each slated to direct, and there was even a version in the works that had Renee Zellweger pegged to play Joplin. Now it looks like Lee Daniels ('Precious') is in talks to take over behind the camera. 'Janis Joplin: Get It While You Can' was penned by noob screenwriters Ron Terry and his wife Teresa Kounin Terry who produced the 2000 made-for-TV movie 'Hendrix.' No official deal with Daniels has been made nor has the independently-financed project closed a deal with Focus Features, with whom they are also in preliminary talks.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this film, if it ever sees the light of day of course. Janis Joplin is a fascinating figure in the world of music and culture. Like many prominent musicians of the 60s, Joplin lived hard and died young, and yet she was one of the most influential female singers in history and there is plenty of interesting material in her life to cultivate into a screenplay. I'm also a little biased in that I live in Austin, given that Joplin was a Texas girl and played some of earliest gigs here in town. I think Amy Adams is a terrific choice for the role and I can't wait to see her lose herself in Joplin's frantic, but electric on stage persona. As to Lee Daniels, Joplin's life is a tragic story and he's more than proven his ability to craft films around tragedy and heartbreak. I'm a little worried about the newbie screenwriters here, but previous experience is not always a prerequisite for success.

What do you guys think? Are you interested in this Joplin biopic? Is Daniels the right choice to direct?

No Amy Adams. I'm sorry, but I'd prefer Cate Blanchett from "I'm not there".

Call it, Trouble In Mind. Then have Carrie Fisher as Janis Joplin, or have it directed by Tim Burton and get Helena Bonham Carter or Johnny Depp to play Janis.

I kinda wish they'd do what they did with Ray and Walk the Line and get a good actor who can sing like Janis. Just find one of the Love, Janis shows and grab that girl.

I'm a huge fan of Amy Adams as an actress, but I don't think she is right for the role at all. It also definitively needs a new title.

I'm thinking it needs a new title. Maybe just remove the Janis Joplin of it.
