Movie Review: Ponyo
Author: Leon

I guess since Disney had no qualms about stealing the classic anime ‘Kimba the White Lion’ to make ‘The Lion King’, its only fair that "Ponyo" is a re-imagining of ‘The Little Mermaid’. Actually, acclaimed director, Hayao Miyazaki, based his tenth film on the original Little Mermaid as written by Hans Christian Anderson. It’s still the story of a redheaded fish-girl obsessed with the surface world that disobeys her disapproving father and surrenders her birthright to fall in love with a human. Only this time out ‘Ponyo’ starts as more of a goldfish than a mermaid and she and the boy she’s fallen in love with, Souske, are roughly 6 or 7 years-old.

"Ponyo" has all the trappings of every other Miyazaki movie except that it’s narrowly aimed at a young audience. Not only are the main characters very young but their design is simplistic and the backgrounds were all drawn in rough colored pencil in a way that resembles a gifted child’s crayon drawings. The story is certainly cute but there’s no real sense of danger or even tension.

As Miyazaki movies go it’s hard to imagine this one being in any fan’s Top 5 unless they haven’t yet graduated from the third grade or it speaks to the neglected 8-year old inside them.

ooh, that sucks, I was honestly excpecting a rather glowing review since almost all of Miyazakis work is great

I don't really care about the aim at a younger audience. Its a Miyazaki movie! I've never seen one in theaters and this is my chance =D

No real sense of danger?! What about the tsunami?

Oh well, I've heard/read a lot of mix reviews. And since I (unfortunately) had to do all that cultural research into Miyazaki, I may have a different perspective than the average person familar with Miyazaki's past films.

Ouch Leon! XD but in all fairness, I saw this at a matinee (it was the first Miyazaki film I ever had the opportunity to see on the big screen) and I do agree it's very obviously aimed at a younger audience. I had fun with it, but I don't think watching it on a TV will take anything away from it.
I'd give it higher praise than you have, but I agree with your rating XD does that make sense?
The animation is gorgeous though and the visual style left a bit of an impression for me and it felt good to see some 2D in theaters again.. but really... I was hoping for a more grand-scale epic. Oh well.
Laputa is still my all time favourite Miyazaki movie.

it was good not his best but artistically the ocean stuff was amazing and of course with the rising pollution problem in japan that all came out again much like it has in his past movies. Pretty movie worth seeing if your a fan but yeah spirited away, and valley of the wind still carry me far more than this one...
