Remember how stupid you thought it was to see movie sequels shoehorn their numeral into a word within their title? Well if you rolled your eyes at 'Scre4m,' or guffawed at '2 Fast 2 Furious,' wait until you flock to the multiplex to see...'Re5ident Evil: Retribution.' Ok, so it's got a goofy title, that shouldn't matter as long as the plot is decent, right? Well, the details about Screen Gems' fifth installment of the Milla Jovovich-starring 'Resident Evil' franchise have come to light so we'll let you be the judge.
The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella's most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.
Wow, with a plot like that how could you not want to see Paul W.S. Anderson's latest 'Resident Evil' film? Oh, possibly because it sounds exactly like every other Paul W.S. Anderson 'Resident Evil' film. Perhaps it's the still-lingering sour taste of 'Resident Evil: Afterlife,' but they were going to have to do something pretty spectacular to earn back my interest in this busted franchise. Somehow, this reheated plot seems less than spectacular. But obviously not everyone feels the same way about the 'Resident Evil' series as it has made over $700 million total worldwide. Still, why go with such a rehashed plot and an idiotic title as well? Given that every other film's title format has been simply 'Resident Evil: Cryptic Word,'why suddenly inject this silly numeral-for-letter system five movies in?
What do you guys think of this title? This plot? Will you see the fifth 'Resident Evil' film?

Craig, your argument could also be used against all the reviews here, so on a site that solicits comments from its members (such as the above "What do you guys think of this title? This plot? etc.), why try to shut down the discourse?
Comment by Craig on January 15, 2012 at 10:41am As I've stated many times before. Look at all the angry whining virgins spewing their venom and nobody in hollywood is listening to any of you. I myself thing the RE series is passable, not outstanding but passable. But if you drones think that this series is the end of the world then do this, WRITE AND DIRECT HOW YOU WANT IT DONE AND STOP BITCHING ABOUT IT!
Fuck! Hire someone to reboot it already instead of giving us crap after crap. The first one was good tho.
Comment by hales on January 13, 2012 at 6:58pm I've only played RE 5, RE Umbrella/Darkside Chronicles, but I'm just as pissed at how butchered this game franchised got.
When they do reboot the series, hopefully they'll stick to George A. Romero's original script for RE 1, which was based off of the Umbrela Mansion with Chris, Jill, Wesker, Barry, Rebecca etc.
In a way, I hope Anderson decides to stretch a ten page script to two hours by filming the whole thing in slow motion and decides not to digitally erase the wirework. That will definitely kill this incarnation of Resident Evil.
I am so freaking sick of that Alice character. I hope they reboot the living shit out of this franchise. If the director wants to feature this character, just have a scene where the zombies are jacking off to her poster or something. Wow, it's cool what beer does to one's inhibitions.
Comment by Alien Minator on January 13, 2012 at 1:04pm I love res evil, played all the games and watched all the movies [sadly] The first was pretty good and the second was not too bad, the thrid, well lets just say the destroyed the franchise by veering away from the games and comics. Even in the opening credits they showed you are totally destroyed world with all life and vegetation destroyed, the 4th Movies was a big pile of crap which could have been better although how much better after the 3 movies we will never know and now they are spinning the speel of the 5th movie and telling us 'She has to ESCAPE a hostile world on the BRINKOF OBLIVION'? Hell Oblivion happened in the 3rd movie. There's very few people left [if the 3rd and 4th installment were anything to go by] i would be giving up on finding those responsible and be heading for NASA looking for my ticket of this planet. Anderson destroyed this series after the sequel and now he is just trying to run it into the ground with what sounds like the same old crap. What i would like to know is how does a now normal woman who's powers were taken off her in the 4th Movie manage to saty alive for very long in the 5th or does she somehow get her gifts back? either way this just sounds like further dissappointment for a gaming franchise i love.
Comment by Karl on January 13, 2012 at 11:16am watched the first two and they were terrible (only gave apocaylpse a chance because nemesis was in it and even then they butchered the character). and since i've heard they have gotten worse I'd rate the first two some 'ol bullshit and 3rd and 4th a F*** YOU.
Comment by Mr. Eff on January 12, 2012 at 8:45pm I won't bother, unless I'm bored and it's on TV. Even then, it's not likely.
This is one of those franchises that has gone on too long for its own good. They need wrap it up already.
Furthermore, taking cues from the game RE5 is a mistake.
Comment by Fernando Palacios on January 12, 2012 at 12:57am please,, just reboot the series already and let george a romero direct it
