If it's crap... We'll tell you

Leon

PLEASE! Help Save My Favorite Show---Oops, Too Late.

I’ve always watched a lot of TV, but now that we’ve started the LEOG podcasts I watch A WHOLE HELLUVA LOT of TV.

That’s why it’s been so stressful these last couple weeks as every time I scan my usual websites or pick up Entertainment Weekly I’m hit with an article on how shows like Heroes, Chuck, My Own Worst Enemy, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, etc. are taking a dive in the ratings and just might get the axe. These are the shows that I DVR every week and struggle to watch in my dwindling spare time. The shows that I already have a heavy emotionally investment in
…and from what I’ve learned from past history, at least ONE OF THEM IS ABOUT TO DIE!

Invariably, every fall there’s a new TV show that I fall in love with which gets canceled within half a season. With the comedies I’m not surprised that most Nielsen families don’t share my sense of humor, but when the plug gets pulled on the action/ adventure/ dramas it hurts. Especially in this post-Sopranos era where most are built around continuing storylines. The networks hooks you then leave you hanging with no concern for offering closure.
Anyone else still carrying baggage from the premature cancellation of “Profit” starring Adrian Pasdar from Heroes?

In more recent years it’s been like clockwork:
2004 - 2005:
Chris O’Donnell's big comeback show, “Head Cases”

Despite co-starring two actors that normally annoy me to no end (Adam Goldberg, Richard Kind) I fell in love with show…for all of the TWO episodes that aired before Fox cancelled it! (Damn, that’s even less than that “Cavemen” show)

2005 - 2006:
The Ray Liotta led heist thriller series“Smith”

It was pretty much just a sexier version of the Andre Braugher F/X show, “Thief” and made it five episodes before biting the dust.

2006 - 2007

At first I wasn’t happy about LOST getting a midseason fill-in with “Daybreak”, but it was Taye Diggs stuck in Groundhog’s Day time loop.

You don’t just start a show like that unless you KNOW you’re gonna finish it. Come on!!

2007- 2008 it would’ve been the new “Bionic Woman” but that show was such a sorry waste of potential even I was glad to hear it wasn’t coming back.

As for 2008- 2009 the suspense of “which show will buy the farm first?” was ended last week when it was leaked that NBC has already decided not to renew “My Own Worst Enemy”.

Yeah, I know. When you see an ad for about a show featuring Christian Slater and the words “own worst enemy” you can’t help but think it’s a spinoff of VH-1’s “Celebrity Rehab”, but it is was the coolest spy series I’ve seen since “Alias”

The series follows the life of American secret agent Edward Albright and his cover alias, Henry Spivey who has no knowledge of his double life. Albright, played by Christian Slater, is implanted with a chip that allows his handlers to physically switch Albright's personality to that of his alias. However, in the pilot episode, there is a malfunction which starts Albright's personalities switching at random, revealing his secret life to his alias. It’s something he has to keep secret, lest the agency he works for would have him terminated. Another great angle to this is that “Henry” is a full realized personality and the two identities know of each other and communicate by leaving messages or videos.

I would urge you watch all of the nine episodes produced and try to get a letter campaign going…but I know that’d go nowhere. Besides, most of you are just too hooked on “Dancing With the Stars”
*sigh*

Okay, enough with the lost causes. Did I tell you about this other show I love?

It’s called “Life”

I thought Pushing Daisies got renewed? I watched the first episode and thought it would have made a good movie instead of a show.

I have no TV now so I have no life.

I miss "Head Cases" too, Leon...what a great show.

Pushing Daisies is a PERFECT example. By the time I heard of the show (and how brilliant it is) there was already talk of it being canceled before I could watch it.

Pushing Daisies....*sigh*. it's quirky, funny, visually breathtaking, and yet ITS STILL getting CANCELED! if the writer's strike had never come about, maybe this show would have gotten more viewers weekly and a season with more than 9 episodes and more than 2 seasons. AS is, even the show's creator Bryan Fuller has thrown in the towel at this point. Why do unique and creative shows always get overlooked? because everyone else is too busy with American Idol or some other same-ol' crap.

I was going to throw my hat in the ring in this disagreement that DonTerrifico and Leon are in, but really, opinions are opinions, and the only way I felt confortable to join in the conversation is to form my own opinion.

And to those who haven't seen it, be your own judge. watch all the episodes here, for free. I just watched the first two episodes, and it's my humble opinion that they're DAMN GOOD so far.

If you can suspend your disbeleif about the fact that the US Govt wouldn't immediately kill a failed experiment (let alone the fact that this technology could exist in the first place) then you will be in for a treat. Check them out before Hulu takes them down.

It surprised me. I wasn't expecting much from a Christian Slater headlined show... but damn, it's worth watching. I'll be watching the rest of these, for sure.

Oh, and for Twin Peaks fans, gorgeous Madchen Amick (Shelley the waitress on Twin Peaks) plays Henry's wife. Me-yow.

lol touche, but honestly there wasnt an original idea or concept to be found in any of those shows and big budgets and hot chicks can only make up so much for shit scripts. I will say My own Worst Enemy was much more deserving of a pickup than say Knight Rider but thats like saying norbit is more deserving of your time than Disaster Movie, or that fat chicks with herpes are better to fuck unprotected than anorexic chicks with aids.

Hmmn. I'm thinking "DonTerrifico" is as much a misnomer as "Cedric the Entertainer".

Bionic Women, Smith and My own Worst Enemy have been the worse shows released in the least few years.

I liked all these shows too, and I hate everything.I'm tired of Reality Shows getting picked over real shows! I'm gonna go Joker on these networks soon! :O

(Actually I'll probably just gripe and send questions to LEOG instead, but it's the thought that counts)

Long Live the League!!!

I'll try to check out "My own worst Enemy". I admit I wasn't interested to watch Christian Slater... but after listening to a lot of your reviews and LEOGs, I find your tastes overlap mine often. I'll give it a shot. Hopefully MOWE is on Hulu or something.

Of course, Firefly is way up there, but I would really see more of "Jack Of All Trades" (Bruce does not AGE!), The Middleman and The Dresden Files. What about you?

There was question at the end of the show last night. They only spent a sec on it, so it's easy to miss! OK,the question was who is the new Jack Nicholson? I started thinking of what actor has that suave cool smooth sexy awesome hot handsome pimp ...
