Lionsgate is continuing to lay the groundwork for round two of 'The Hunger Games' franchise. Now it looks as if they've added some heavy hitting talent to their 'Catching Fire' arsenal. Word is that Philip Seymour Hoffman ('Mission: Impossible III,' 'Moneyball') will be portraying Plutarch Heavensbee in the Francis Lawrence-directed followup to Gary Ross' inaugural cinematic foray Suzanne Collins' best-selling book series. Heavensbee is the head gamemaker for the Hunger Games themselves. Lionsgate was able to catch Hoffman at the end of a Broadway run, portraying Willy Loman in Arthur Miller's 'Death of a Salesman.' The storyline of 'Catching Fire' will follow Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) fresh off her win in the 74th annual games as the Capitol prepares for the 75th; rebellion brewing all the while. The film is aiming to begin production in September.
Here again, not having read the books, I can't speak to the Philip Seymour Hoffman's precise qualifications for this role. However, I am really excited to see that he is coming aboard. Hoffman is one of those great, chameleon-like actors who entirely loses himself into whatever role he's taking on; something that has garnered him much praise and acclaim. Yet he's not afraid to dive headfirst into genre fare and treat it with the same weight and care as an art film. He was easily the best part of 'Mission: Impossible III,' proving himself to be a fantastic villain, and I know he will knock Plutarch into the stratosphere. I will say that I'm kind of excited to see what outlandish costumes he ends up being saddled with. Hey, it can't be any worse than the dirty rags he wore to play Dusty in 'Twister,' another of cinema's greatest characters if you ask me.
What do you guys think? Sound off, 'Hunger Games' fans. Is he right for the role of Plutarch Heavensbee?

Comment by Miracleman on July 10, 2012 at 12:43pm I've read the books, and Hoffman is absolutely PERFECT for Heavensbee. Especially if he starts channeling that subtle creepiness thing like he does so well.
Comment by Exploding Knees on July 10, 2012 at 12:09pm I don't know anything about the Hunger Games, but if PSH gets to lay down the creepiness, I'm totally in.
Always a solid choice
Comment by DieHardAlien on July 10, 2012 at 10:09am After seeing the trailer for "The Master", I'm excited to see what he'll do as Plutarch. Although the actor that I imagined playing him was Michael Fassbender.

Comment by Joshua Balcombe on July 9, 2012 at 8:17pm LMAO NeverSerious, collegehumor. Whoever is writing these, start giving names already ffs..... How do you know that He will do a character justice if you know nothing about him...? even if they keep the better character arcs in the movie(which they failed to do last time) who knows if they don't change a crap ton of other things about him or if it just doesn't work....
Comment by Christopher on July 9, 2012 at 8:14pm That will actually be a lot of coolness for the next movie.
What else will they surprise us with?CAN'T WAIT! #reallytoooldtobeafanboyofthisfilm
