2009 seems like a great year for sci-fi. And I'm not a big sci-fi fan, but when something great shows up I'm excited. Like right fucking NOW! First things first, the trailer:
Here are higher quality versions: http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/district9/
Neill Blomkamp is writting and directing "District 9", a movie about an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth [which] suddenly find[s] a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology.
What seems so great about it, that I feel nothing wrong with putting it on my list of most interesting movies of the year? First of all: serious tone. No jokey bullshit for kids, cool dialogues and beautiful, perfectly groomed people on every corner. No, it’s not your typical summer flick, even though it comes in August. I feel it’s the same deal as with Michael Mann’s ”Public Enemies” - it just happens to come out in the summer.
Next interesting thing is the setting. Not, let’s say, New York City. It’s not even in the USA. It’s Africa (Southern Africa to be exact)! How weird is that? Aliens in Africa? Beings afraid of other beings? Trying to survive? Mistrust? Interrogations? Riots? Except for adding bleak, grittier and dirtier feel it serves as an analogue. Looks like the director and the writer really want to tell us something about the world, but not in in-your-face kind of way. You can see it pretty easily, but the message is not overshadowing the sci-fi part. And after all the plot suggests the movie will be an action/sci-fi/drama, but I'm sure it's not going to be the kind that makes you turn your brain off before you can have fun.
Last, but not least, are the aliens. They’re not trying to invade Earth at all cost. Kill and eat all the humans. They want to survive. They can’t leave for a reason, but not a selfish one. They’re stuck. Isn’t it perfectly realistic? Humans and aliens aren’t mortal enemies here. We both have to work it out and they seem as concerned as the locals are. ”Alien Nation” comes to mind, but the context of the story and the movie itself seems more complicated, serious and realistic in tone.
And then, there's of course this... If you’re not yet completely sold on it, then watch this short film by Neill Blomkamp, which is sort of a prequel to “District 9”, ”Alive in Joburg”:
Here you can download "Alive in Joburg": http://dekku.nofatclips.com/2005/11/neill-blomkamp-alive-in-jorburg.html
And, of course, there must be a viral campaign:

To me it’s the most expected sci-fi of the year next to ”Moon” and ”The Road”.
Kurwa. I'm gonna be maaad if I'm wrong on this one. :)
PS And here is another Blomkamp's sci-fi short: http://dekku.nofatclips.com/2006/01/neill-blomkamp-tempbot.html
I'm excited about this as well. This director is being cherry picked by Peter Jackson to direct the Halo movie that Jackson has been trying to get off the ground for years now, and District 9 is his way of showing the studios that this guys has the mad skillz to do it. Or so Carlyle tells me.
Having TV is keeping my movie consumption down, but I need to mention Pontypool
This little Canadian gem surprised the hell outta me. I thought there wasn't much more room for exploration with the Viral-Zombie idea, but then Tony Burgess came up...
