Peffer Reviews Presents- Lollipop Chainsaw

Suda 51, youdid it again. You made a crazy action game that I love. That’s right, Lollipop Chainsaw is a great game. I seepeople criticize it for having a cheerleader protagonist cutting up zombies. Manythink that’s ridiculous- I’m not playing some cheerleader. Majority of gamersout there won’t even try the game before they condemn it.  So hopefully my review here will change a fewminds.

Story- You play as Juliet Starling, your typical teenager girl except she also happens to be a zombie hunter. The game starts out with the zombie apocalypse taking over the school and Juliethas to chainsaw them all. The exciting part is the zombies are not viruszombies, it’s more of a supernatural cause. You meet her boyfriend Nick, afootball player but now is her headless sidekick. His head swings alongside heron her hip as she slices her way through the levels of these flesh eaters. Asthe game goes on you meet her family which are all crazy and weird in their ownway, but all written so colorfully. The villains are just plain awesome. Whatbetter to fight a ditsy cheerleader than zombie metal heads? All the bosses aredifferent forms of rock artist from Punk to Viking Metal. Each are unusual, yetfunny in their own way. This story is so well written that at the end they gofor some sappy semimetal moments you actually care what is happening. No it’snot a tear jerker ending but just like the end of Shadows of the Damned I cared about these over the top characters.I was a bit pissed towards the end of this game because they have a good andbad ending. I have no idea how to get the good ending so I saw the messed upending, so be aware if you haven’t played this yet.

Sound- The sound in this game is topnotch from the music to the voice acting. The music mixes original music andpopular pop music such as “Hey Micky” and “You Spin Me Round.” The voice actingis just perfect, I never laughed this hard in a game at all this year. This isthe funniest game of 2012. The banter between Juliet and Nick is funny as hell.Nick is like any other human freaked out as hell and she acts like it is justanother Tuesday.

Graphics- Some games try to go withthe comic book feel and add cell shading graphics and most can never capturethe feel. However, this game I feel captured it quite well. It’s notrevolutionary but the graphics do look nice. Instead of making this a gore festthey mix blood with sparkles which I am ok with. We’ve all played gory games,we know what blood is.  This was a nicechange in pace with it being more shinny. I do want to say this now 95% of thetime girls in video game are never attractive but damn did they make this girlgood looking. Juliet is not only sexy and playful, she is witty. The game knowsit, I’m just glad the developers made her 18 or everyone would be put on a sexoffender list.

Gameplay- this is where the gameslides in the rating. It is damn near perfect until you start playing the game. The problem is  the controls are a bitclunky. I am use to the tight controls of DevilMay Cry, this game kind of feels like if Resident Evil was a hack andslash.  The game does have a good upgradesystem which to have a good one basically the upgrades actually change thegameplay. I loved the boss fights because it brought back that old school threestage boss fight. Some people don’t like that, but honestly I missed my stagedboss fights. The game is very linear and has little to no exploration which notevery game needs. Some may say it is a bit repetitive in the AI enemies but Ithink they change up the zombies just enough to make each level a different experience. The one thing I disliked were the levels where you had to go into this OldSchool arcade type video game world and that was different, yet I found it moreannoying than anything.

Overall thisgame is worth playing and even owning. I want this game to succeed so Suda 51will keep making new IPs and keep up his craziness. For Suda fans this is afull price go buy it now. For everyone else I say bargain bin if you find itfor $20 than get it.  I give this game asolid B.
