Just when you though Hollywood was out of surprises, a rather interesting development has cropped up regarding Marc Webb's 'Amazing Spider-Man 2.' We already know that Jamie Foxx will be playing the principal villain Electro, but now it appears our antagonist may get some backup from a very unexpected source. Paul Giamatti ('John Dies at the End') is in talks to play The Rhino in the upcoming sequel. The Rhino is a character who began life as a professional criminal, but passed over into supervillain territory when he came into possession of a polymer suit that made him nearly impervious to physical harm. It also imbued him with super speed. In addition to this news, reports are coming in that Felicity Jones ('Like Crazy') is also in negotiations for an unspecified role. Giamatti has evidently been a fan of the character for a long time. Here's what he said in a 2011 interview...
"I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid. It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit, and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies.’ But maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me. … If they ever go with The Rhino, I would be ready and waiting.”
I could not be happier for Giamatti. Not only is he a fantastic actor who is finally getting the opportunity to appear in a blockbuster comic book movie, but he's also getting the chance to play a comic book character he's been a fan of since childhood. Physically, Giamatti may seem an odd choice for Rhino, but there are mitigating factors to consider here. First, Rhino, as a character, is really about the suit, and it wouldn't take long for Giamatti to get into shape enough to wear the Rhino suit. Also, if The Lizard in 'Amazing Spider-Man' is any indication, there will probably be no small amount of digital enhancement utilized. I'm not advocating such things, but it'll most likely be present. My only concern, as it usually is when multiple villains are announced for a superhero movie, is how 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' will balance its bad guys. More than likely, and here's where we get into possible bizarro world territory, Jamie Foxx will be the lead baddie and Paul Giamatti will play the goon henchmen. Given Marc Webb's breakout with '500 Days of Summer,' I'm not surprised he's looking at more indie performers like Giamatti and Jones, but I am happy that the studio is allowing him to make bold choices with his casting.
What do you guys think? Is Giamatti the right choice for Rhino? How do you think this second villain will be worked into the story alongside Electro?

Comment by Nick Money Elzer on January 29, 2013 at 1:22pm This is possibly main plot point #5 or #6 they have to cover in the movie though, Norman Osborn turning into Green Goblin and introduction of Harry Osborn and Mary-Jane for major roles in ASM3 as well as the Gwen Stacey death and how they impacts Peter leading into it. Adding another villain has me worrying that they could Spiderman 3 this up.
Comment by Judas on January 29, 2013 at 1:19pm I think having two big villains is not a very good idea, it probably means that either a.) we get two underdeveloped villains or b.) we get a good villain and an underdeveloped one. They already made this mistake in Spiderman 3, why are they doing this again?
Comment by BlackMagic on January 29, 2013 at 1:12pm Questionable, but my main concern is the whole two villains on-screen idea. Most superhero movies follow a pattern where they have to team up and one of them inevitably dies, going as far back as Superman 2. You get exceptions like that movie and X-2 where the two villains don't just team up because it's convenient for the plot, but superhero movies typically don't know how to balance out multiple villains.
Also, once again considering the more realistic tone this series is trying to take (yet juxtaposing The Lizard into it, especially Peter's explanation to Captain Stacy about this 'giant lizard'), I'm not sure if the studios even know what tone they really want to take with this series.

Comment by HellFeast on January 29, 2013 at 1:00pm Now i cant get the image of Paul Giamattis face in an entire shitty cg rhino body.
Comment by Lt. Commander Armstrong on January 29, 2013 at 12:58pm He will have to do a voice, or something. They could give him all the make-up and CG they want but if Paul Giamatti doesn't at least attempt to alter his natural voice for the Rhino then I can't see myself taking it seriously.
Comment by HellFeast on January 29, 2013 at 12:54pm That would be a fucking unthreatening tiny rhino.
