Just when you though Hollywood was out of surprises, a rather interesting development has cropped up regarding Marc Webb's 'Amazing Spider-Man 2.' We already know that Jamie Foxx will be playing the principal villain Electro, but now it appears our antagonist may get some backup from a very unexpected source. Paul Giamatti ('John Dies at the End') is in talks to play The Rhino in the upcoming sequel. The Rhino is a character who began life as a professional criminal, but passed over into supervillain territory when he came into possession of a polymer suit that made him nearly impervious to physical harm. It also imbued him with super speed. In addition to this news, reports are coming in that Felicity Jones ('Like Crazy') is also in negotiations for an unspecified role. Giamatti has evidently been a fan of the character for a long time. Here's what he said in a 2011 interview...
"I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid. It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit, and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies.’ But maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me. … If they ever go with The Rhino, I would be ready and waiting.”
I could not be happier for Giamatti. Not only is he a fantastic actor who is finally getting the opportunity to appear in a blockbuster comic book movie, but he's also getting the chance to play a comic book character he's been a fan of since childhood. Physically, Giamatti may seem an odd choice for Rhino, but there are mitigating factors to consider here. First, Rhino, as a character, is really about the suit, and it wouldn't take long for Giamatti to get into shape enough to wear the Rhino suit. Also, if The Lizard in 'Amazing Spider-Man' is any indication, there will probably be no small amount of digital enhancement utilized. I'm not advocating such things, but it'll most likely be present. My only concern, as it usually is when multiple villains are announced for a superhero movie, is how 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' will balance its bad guys. More than likely, and here's where we get into possible bizarro world territory, Jamie Foxx will be the lead baddie and Paul Giamatti will play the goon henchmen. Given Marc Webb's breakout with '500 Days of Summer,' I'm not surprised he's looking at more indie performers like Giamatti and Jones, but I am happy that the studio is allowing him to make bold choices with his casting.
What do you guys think? Is Giamatti the right choice for Rhino? How do you think this second villain will be worked into the story alongside Electro?

Comment by Chris james on January 29, 2013 at 5:37pm there's nothing wrong w/ having multiple villans in a superhero movie. You just have to follow the dark knight trilogy example and make sure it's all part of a story that makes sense and fits together. In SM3 none of the storylines, Green Goblin, Sandman, and Venom were connected in any way and made the movie feel like a mess.
Comment by stiver on January 29, 2013 at 5:36pm The words "spider-man villain" and "Paul Giamatti" never even crossed my mind, and sounds pretty dumb, but on reflection: This scenario is both awesome and humorous and I want it.
Comment by GojiraG on January 29, 2013 at 5:25pm So, the movie is gonna have electro AND rhino? huh....
Comment by Ecc3ntric Sanity on January 29, 2013 at 5:19pm what do you call a baby rhino? whatever the answer is, thats what giamatti will resemble...
its a shame cuz i love the actor....

@untrollable T - Actually, if you read the unlockable bios in the game it's revealed that Smythe was lying about them not doing any more human experiments in the beginning of the game and that he actually was a Russian mobster that they ran tests on.
Comment by Tom on January 29, 2013 at 4:25pm I could not be more uninterested in this new Spider Man reboot series. The first movie with the Lizard was just blah.
Comment by Dr. Detfink on January 29, 2013 at 4:22pm Not questioning the talent.
Questioning how the writing is trying to tweak these characters and adding too much thought. Most of these characters have a very simple back story. Don't over develop punch-out villains so much that the focus on the hero is lost.
Comment by Kroxigor on January 29, 2013 at 4:11pm I really love the rhino should be itneresting =D
