I'm Thinking Twice About The Things That Go Bump In The Night...
It's really incredible what you can do with a camera, baby powder, moving sheets, and swinging doors. It's even more incredible when you look at the budget of this film and think about how much you can get out of it. Oren Peli really has achieved something remarkable, and it's a shame this isn't playing nation wide. Audiences across the country always seem to get some piece of crap horror movie with a big budget, but what studios don't realize is that we actually want something with substance, something that will get into our heads and mess with our psyche. If you're looking for that type of film this year, then Paranormal Activity is your best bet.
What makes Paranormal Activity such a great horror film is its ability to utilize old-school fear tactics and embed that fear into the audience. You're not scared over the possibility of a loud noise coming up (even though many do), but more scared over what's going to happen to this couple who is struggling with a demonic presence. You're scared over the possibilities, and the realism of the film makes the fear even more intense. The atmosphere Peli creates keeps the audience glued to the screen, especially during the night sequences, which is when most of the paranormal activity occurs.
The realistic cinematography is great, the acting is well done, and the film was cut down perfectly. The movie ended right when it needed to end, and when you leave the theater, you'll worry over your ability to get a good nights sleep. If you're the type of person that gets spooked out by ghosts and demons, then this film will definitely disturb you and stick with you for a while. Even if you're not scared by these elements, you'll still have a fun time because the suspense is non-stop. This is probably one of the best horror films I've seen in years and I hope it gets more exposure. There was lots of screaming in the theater, and the ending was just explosive. You'll get a lot of bang for your buck, and as film fanatics, that's all we ask for.
