'Paranormal Activity,' currently boasting three films with another on the way this year, is already one of the most successful horror franchises of all time. In addition to scaring the be-Jesus out of audiences worldwide, the initial film in the series sparked a resurgence in the so-called found footage subgenre. Now, Paramount is putting together a kinda/sorta/not really offshoot that will star an all-Latino cast and delve into Catholic-based supernatural mythology, though it will apparently not be a Spanish language film. The new, as-yet-untitled "cousin" of 'Paranormal Activity,' as one source described it, will see the return of 'PA' producers Oren Peli and Jason Blum as well as 'Paranormal Activity 2' & '3' writer Christopher Landon who will write and direct the new film. No word yet on when production will begin.
I have a couple of thoughts on this. First, it will be interesting to see a horror film from a major American studio center on Latinos as that is not something I can recall seeing previously. My hope is that since the conceit of the film is paranormal/religious occurrences within Catholic mythologies, that there is a strong cultural relevance to this approach and that it isn't just some sort of ploy to target specific demographics; filmmaking by focus group is the last thing we need right now. This actually brings me to what I feel is the most ominous element of this story: the Catholicism angle. Don't get me wrong, religious horror can be downright unsettling and majorly effective, see 'The Exorcist,' but given the collection of people involved here, it's a cinch this will end up being a found footage movie. The last found footage movie we got from Paramount that centered on Catholic mythology was 'The Devil Inside.' Did it make a crap-ton of money? Yes. Was it any good? My contention is a thundering no. My hope is that this is Paramount's attempt to go that route again with people who actually know what they are doing. But hey, that's just my two cents.
What do you guys think? Does this project interest you? Anybody want to weigh in on 'The Devil Inside?'

Comment by Daniel Cubillas on April 11, 2012 at 12:04am I get the feeling that the nanny of the paranormal activity 2 movie will be related to this latino family. She was aware of all that demond stuff so maybe is because she experienced it first hand 0_0.

Comment by I'm Batman on April 10, 2012 at 12:31am Can't they make a movie with Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria, and Dania Ramirez. I don't care about plot, story or dialogue, just film them having a sleep over, it would be a great movie. Call it Girls Night In!

Comment by MavenCree on April 9, 2012 at 7:52pm @Tommy That movie would be all of ten seconds long. I refer you to the spill.com review of PA1, 6 seconds into it:
Comment by Bearded Critic on April 9, 2012 at 7:27pm As a Mexican I think a Latino horror movie focused on a Mexican Urban Legend like a demon in a small pueblo or La Llorona done in a PA style would be awesome and terrifying.
