Paramount Buys Rights to 'The Martian Chronicles'

Source: THR

Paramount has acquired the movie rights to Ray Bradbury's short story collection 'The Martian Chronicles'. A staple of science fiction literature, 'Chronicles' focuses on the attempt to establish colonies on the red planet, the relationship between humans and the indigenous Martians, and an eventual nuclear war. Mega-producer John Davis is attached to the film but they've yet to hire a writer for the project.

There have been several failed attempts to bring the classic novel to the big screen - Universal  gained the rights in 1997 and at some point even had Steven Spielberg attached to produce, but the film never got off the ground. However, the book has been adapted into comic book form and a 1980 TV mini-series jointly produced by NBC and the BBC that starred Rock Hudson and Bernadette Peters.

I remember watching the tv mini series as a kid;I thought it was boring compared to Star Trek or BSG but it did have a great story and characters.I just hope they don't screw it up like the remake of V.

@Boatloads1017
It'll probably be a trilogy since it does seem weird cramming so much story into two hours.

I would hope they wouldn't try to cram it all in one movie. I'm definitely not holding my breath on this one.

@ Abdullah Alhazred - well, if he is a technophobe, that would certainly explain the neuroses and paranoia of the unchecked advancement of technology that runs through much of his work.

As for me, this is just a "meh" news bleeb. Ever since Avatar hit it big at Fox, studios have been grabbing up as many high-concept (and very pricey to recreate) sci-fi properties as they can (see the prequel to Planet of the Apes that's coming out this year). They're all just changing hands right now, so until somebody greenlights anything, I'll be more or less cautious about guessing how these will be realized.

Good news. An intelligent story. lets hope is does not get "dumbed down" now if we could just get some one to do "Stranger in a Strange Land"

i thought he hated television. Come to think of it, isnt kind of odd that a technophobe like him became sci fi writer?

I liked the TV miniserise addaption.  As well, I think I remember seeing the short stories on the old Ray Bradbary Theater, which was always a really good show.  I'd love to find in on VHS or DVD or Hulu.  I'm not sure there's much of a currently relevent story to tell - enless they embelished it alot, which I am guessing they will do.  Expect super crumudgenly FOX-news watching Ray Bradbary have something to say about it.
