FULL Price here,...I think CoHOst was nudged over to BtSex, due to the Raimi factor :p

DeFranco was adequate, and had some shining moments. I Totally agree with the actress being a bit off after the transformation, she felt like a 'Glee' version of herself.  The CG of China girl was amazing. Texture, depth of field on the close ups...wow.

The World of OZ,...Raimi HAD to of did his homework and homage dues to this old Disney short.

Old Folks like Leon should know this,...the Reeds playing the pipes instantly took me here.

Minor SPOILER:

I was waiting for the Ruby slippers,..but I guess that'll be for the sequel, eh?

I thought it was kind of amazing visually. But James De Franco:)....? His performance was strange and detached for me. I thought he was poor actually

While understandable, I'm rather sad you guys mention "the original" approximately three million times and yet mention the books like... once? My point is that while the 1939 musical is a classic milestone in film, it essentially steps all over the books, such that any attempt at going back to them and mining their universe is shot down in favor of trying to emulate the classic movie.

James Franco + prequel = success

Funny how this movie seems to be a case of 'you'll either love it or hate it' .

And personally I wasn't very fond of it at all and also disagree with just about everything positive you guys said about this movie!

My review for it

First time I go to see a movie AFTER listening to one of your reviews... (after 5 years, yeah)
Well some of it was great. But after the China Girl plot, I was trying hard to see what you liked so much. There's just so much cliché - dialogue / noise / jokes.
I mean thats the kind of things you always joke about in other movies... Why give it such a sure high full price rating? I don't understand. Watching this movie I was wondering why it didn't get the Spill-bash it deserved (for it's end at least)

Still a very very nice family movie, a Great and Powerful one too (Brianpuned)

Saw it yesterday morning in IMAX 3D and I freaking loved it! I almost cried near the end (judge me) The china girl especially made me cry. The 3D was awesome (made the flying monkeys even scarier), The land of Oz was beautiful, The acting was good (except James Franco bored me),  Finley the monkey and the little china girl were likeable, and it's the best live action kids movie I've seen in recent memory.

Just got back from seeing it. It's a very beautiful looking movie, but the script and characters are pretty dull. The dialogue was too flat and the performances of some of the actors reflected how poorly written the dialogue was. James Franco is woefully miscast as Oz. You need a certain level of charm and wit when playing a con man. Franco had no charisma and it was likely watching him read off cue cards. The unnecessary and forced romance between him and another character didn't add anything to the film either. Milia Kunis, an actress I really like, was also a weak point for me. I liked her in the beginning, but she couldn't sell her character later in the film. Her character arc was handled poorly. Rachel Weiz and Zach Braff did a solid job with the material they were given. No complaints when it came to them. Joey King, the actress who voiced China Girl, was the stand-out in the film. She was the only character I had a real attachment to. Like I said before, it's a very pretty film. The CGI can be jarring at first, but I adapted to it quickly. The Emerald City, the Flying Monkeys and China Girl were my favorite CGI effects. The visual effects team, not Sam Raimi, deserve the credit for that. I'm just sad that the story, characters and writing couldn't match the visuals in the film. I went into this film with a very optimistic attitude. I've never read the other Oz books, but I wanted to see the world that L. Frank Baum created. I think Sam Raimi was the wrong choice for this movie. He has an eye when it comes to special effects and action scenes, but he fails when it comes to directing actors. Sadly, it's just a Rental for me.
