If it's crap ... We'll tell you

Hector Fernando Andrade JR. II posted a statusI watch the Oscars every year. Something you always have to consider is who you want to win, and who should win. There's a big difference between those two. Watching last night, these three winners surprised me.
Quentin Tarantino wins for Best Original Screenplay
This win surprised me because from the past, the academy really doesn't seem to care for Tarantino's work. I can see why, I don't care for his work so much either. I like some of his movies, don't get me wrong (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Deathproof), but I think he's a little overrated. I mean, how many times can you make a revenge movie? But it was good to see the academy finally dish out a gold statue for the guy. His acceptance speech, wow, what a self-absorbed speech. "I did this...I created these characters...". Did he have anyone else to thank besides himself?
Ang Lee wins for Best Director
This surprised me because I was SO SURE Spielberg was going to take this one. I would of bet money on it. To my surprise, Mr. Lee won this one, which I couldn't be happier for him (Well, come one, Affleck was snubbed for this category. We all know he should of won it). Aside from directing one of the worst movies I've ever seen (The Hulk), this guy is a visionary director and knows how to make beauty for film audiences.
Brave wins for Best Animated Feature Film
This one shocked the ever living crap out of me! Remember at the beginning of this, I said there's a difference between who you want to win and who should win? Well for this category, Brave wasn't either one of those for me. I wanted Wreck-It Ralph to win, but it should of been won by ParaNorman. Brave to me was good, just not great. It did everything right for an animated film, but that's it. It played it safe. For a Pixar movie, its not on that high level of some of their great films.
So those were the surprise wins to me off the top of my head. If I can think of any more, I'll update this post.
Oh, that tie, crazy! (There have been ties for an oscar before, in the 90s, 80s, and 60s) Glad Skyfall won for sound! It sounded amazing in IMAX.
But what did you guys think? What winners surprised you?

Comment by Robert Wild on February 25, 2013 at 5:03pm Couldn't agree more. As much as I love Pixar, Brave didn't deserve to win. I mean, I liked it (it was a matinee for me)but that's it. Frankenweenie was more unique. I personally didn't care for Paranorman, but in a film perspective, it still should have won over Brave. And I absolutely LOVED Wreck-It Ralph. It's not because I LIKED it more than Brave (well, I still did) but it was just a better film in every way. It had every reason to win.
That being said, I can't complain. Pretty much everything else that won I was fine with. I thought Ang Lee totally deserved best director, Daniel-Day Lewis certainly deserved best actor, same with Anne Hathaway for best supporting actress, and Argo for best picrue. In the end, I was happy, but I couldn't help but just go "...really?" when Brave won for best animated film. I was glad that Paperman won for animated short film though.
