The Oscar nominations are in and let's just say that I'm losing my patience with the Academy. For this years lineup, we have some good and some bad. I'm glad that Spielberg got nominated, it was nice seeing Skyfall get a Best Original Song nom, but the bad choices by the Academy outweigh the good. First of all, the number of directors who got snubbed, yet their movies get nominated for Best Picture. Ben Affleck and Quentin Tarantino aren't nominated for Best Director, but their movies get a Best Picture nom...where is the sense in that? You can't just nominate a movie and then completely snub the person who made it. Then there's Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson not being nominated for Best Supporting Actor in Django Unchained. Leonardo DiCaprio crushed a glass in his hand and bled his actual blood, how do you not see dedication in that? I've personally always felt that the Academy has some weird grudge against DiCaprio, but whatever. By the way, what the hell is Amour? I've seen this movie with quite a few nominations, but I've never heard of it. I wouldn't be surprised if I wasn't the only person who has no clue what Amour is. If the Academy really wants to piss people off, Amour will probably win everything it's been nominated for. Where is The Dark Knight Rises for technical achievments? As great as I think TDKR is, I didn't expect it to get a nom for anything big, due to Christopher Nolan being snubbed all the time, but couldn't it at least get a nom for Best Cinematography and Best Original Score? Also, Skyfall not being recognized in anything major and Looper not getting a recognition for Best Original Screenplay. Seriously, Academy, stop with all this artsy shit. Just because a movie is full of action and not in the general idea of snobby critics idea of a good movie doesn't mean you can't recognize it for something major. Everyone who doesn't live under a rock knows what Skyfall is and it didn't get a Best Picture nom. Amour is some movie that came out of nowhere with these noms and the Academy is going apeshit all over it. Seeing a movie like Mirror Mirror get nominated is the thing that left my mouth hanging open. It didn't get a Best Picture nom or anything like that, but to say Mirror Mirror is worthy of any type of Oscar is just beyond sad. Am I mad at the Academy this year for all the snubs? Yes. Am I going to watch the Oscars this year? Yes, there are some nominations I'm glad about. I'm not as mad as I was when Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close got nominated for Best Picture, but the snubs are pretty hard to ignore.

You can't say "this person/movie was snubbed" without saying what he/she/it should replace from what got nominated. So what would you change, exactly?

To requote, well, myself:

"To me, this was honestly a really good year for movies, Oscar nominated or otherwise. I mean sure, there are snubs here I suppose, but in regards to this year, the "race" was pretty damn tight throughout, so there were GOING to be some noticeable names left out here in there. Honestly that's a pretty good sign; even WITH the snubs we still get a solid list like this."

And Robert, all Whedon had to do was show up, spice up the dynamic between characters as he's famous for, and call it a day. The writing and the effects did the heavy lifting for that movie, which in all honesty DID run longer than it needed to. There was no POSSIBLE way he was going to get nominated (and just consider the other Marvel movie directors like Joe Johnson and Kenneth Branaugh and Jon Faveru? Why give Whedon ALL the credit and Oscar glory?). Same more or less applies to Nolan for TDKR, a film inferior to obviously the Dark Knight and even Inception. Hell, I haven't seen The Prestige yet, but I just might say that TDKR is actually his weakest film to date....

And if it wasn't Looper, it woulda been Skyfall. If it wasn't Skyfall, it woulda been Moonrise. If it wasn't Moonrise Kingdom, it woulda been The Master. And so on and so forth. Like I just said, this year was stacked and SOMEBODY was gonna get left out the party. That doesn't mean they aren't "worthy" or anything, it's just that it's a packed house, ya know? To me that's a GOOD thing to have a good list already, but then have other films that would have fit in just as perfectly. Just goes to show you that there were a lot of good movies this year...

Robert, I have indeed heard of the YouReviewer Awards and I'm honestly more excited for that award show more than the Oscars. At least the Youtube critics like Jahns, Schmoes, Chris Stuckmann, etc, will be able to provide something worth watching.

I wasn't to angry at the Oscars this time (although I agree it's RIDICULOUS that Joss Whedon, Chris Nolan, and Ben Affleck didn't get a nomination for best director, but, whatever) and then you mentioned Looper, and I COMPLETELY forgot about that one.

You're right Looper, was incredible, and is the definition of an Oscar snub this year. Have you heard of Jeremy Jahns? He hates the oscars, he and several other youtubers have their OWN movie review awards, the Youreviewers awards. You should check it out.
