If it's crap ... We'll tell you

James Cameron is a director so ensconced in film culture that you need only say his name and his legacy is immediately conjured in our collective minds. We think of Terminators, of Aliens, of trips to Pandora and to the bottom of the sea. When it was announced that he'd be doing sequels to 'Avatar,' there were plenty of excited fans. That excitement has been sullied however by remarks Cameron made in a recent interview with the New York Times. Apparently, the legendary director is finished making (in every sense of that word) movies that don't rhyme with Shmavatar. Here's what he said...
"I’ve divided my time over the last 16 years over deep ocean exploration and filmmaking. I’ve made two movies in 16 years, and I’ve done eight expeditions. Last year I basically completely disbanded my production company’s development arm. So I’m not interested in developing anything. I’m in the 'Avatar' business. Period. That’s it. I’m making 'Avatar 2,' 'Avatar 3,' maybe 'Avatar 4,' and I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them. I’m not interested in taking scripts. And that all sounds I suppose a little bit restricted, but the point is I think within the 'Avatar' landscape I can say everything I need to say that I think needs to be said, in terms of the state of the world and what I think we need to be doing about it. And doing it in an entertaining way."
So yeah, looks like the King of the World has found his definitive kingdom and isn't interested in leaving it ever again. To be fair, he does go on to say that he also still wants to make his documentaries, but apparently in the realm of narrative fiction, there is only 'Avatar' for Jimmy henceforth. I will freely admit that while I was in awe of the spectacle of 'Avatar,' I found its story to be less-than-stellar and its characters pretty one-dimensional. I'm therefore a bit distressed that we won't be getting any more original films from him, in either a director or producer capacity. Moreover, I hardly think 'Avatar' needs two sequels let alone the third at which he hints. Then again, prior to 'Avatar' Cameron hadn't made a narrative film since 'Titanic' in 1997, so it's not as if he was being very prolific prior to this announcement. Yet it's still a shame to conceive that he really is done making anything else. And what about the projects he's rumored to already have in the works? Does this mean no 'Battle Angel' after all?
What do you guys think of Cameron's announcement? Are you excited for the 'Avatar' sequels? Would you prefer to see him work in other universes?

Comment by SkyNAT on May 8, 2012 at 12:42am Damn it. I was really looking forward to a Battle Angel movie directed by him. Hope he'll change his mind in the next few years.
Comment by Composite Who Horrible on May 8, 2012 at 12:38am So instead of utilizing all the horses to give him the best experience, James Cameron cuts the reigns on all but one of his ponies... A one trick pony at that. Can we all imagine a world where Spielberg said, "Screw it I'm just going to make E.T. over and over again". Yeah... No. Sorry to see you go Jimmy, enjoy life as a record skip.
Comment by Corey Houlden on May 8, 2012 at 12:36am He should just keep making Schwarzenegger films.
I'm surprised anyone still thought he was ever going to do Battle Angel. I wouldn't say it's sad that he's sticking to Avatar movies, wish him all the best, I just hope he doesnt get as bored with them as a lot of other people seem to be already. It's going to take some work to keep a movie franchise with such a hamfisted environmental message fresh without getting so overly preachy that people dont get tired of hearing it.
Comment by Cameron Johnson on May 7, 2012 at 10:12pm "Titanic" really unveiled Jim Cameron as one of today's great directors, and as great as "Avatar" was and its sequels probably will be, I want him to stretch. For that matter, maybe he should take another break from sci-fi, because while I am perhaps disagreeably of the idea that "Titanic" was his masterpiece, he's certainly showed himself to have enough range and artistic ability to hold his own in other genres. Fingers crossed on the "Avatar" sequels being the beginning of a new age for Cameron as a filmmaker, rather than the beginning of the end.

Comment by Gift of the Magi on May 7, 2012 at 8:15pm So the King of Eye Candy wants to focus on the most cliche' of his creations and one of the few he crafted himself...after ripping off about 17 better films. Fine by me. His run of films have been almost exclusive fun to loook at but TERRIBLE in story or character development. As a director he's a bit of a Micheal Bay: great on visuals but clueless on heart or how to use actors as something more than set pieces. Granted he's not nearly as insulting to the senses as Bay, but he's in the same vein of style rules and substance can go to hell.
I think the saddest part of his 'legacy' is how many people are convinced he was some kind of film-making god. The comparisons to Lucas are fairly accurate as that they both created new technologies to create wonderful new special effects...and yet lack the ability to craft stories. Worse, they both cling to their flaws as though they were virtues and demands others follow their example (especially with the whole 3D crapola). His films are...mediocre at best, completely dependent on wowing the audience with a scene to the point they forget the people in it are made of cardboard.
So you might guess I am NOT sad to see him retire. After Avatar, any hope I had for the man ran out into the street and promptly got hit by a bus. If he wants to focus on other thing, then go for it. He's a techie that really could make some worthwhile contributions to science in the field of oceanography...and if that keeps him away from films, all the better.
Comment by Waylander on May 7, 2012 at 8:02pm If he worked on other stuff and avater we would get one every 5 years, this might mean we will get them quicker so i'am all for it.
Comment by strange-benhur on May 7, 2012 at 7:21pm man, I really wanted to see his version of Battle Angel'
Comment by HudsonsirhesHicks on May 7, 2012 at 7:03pm This could be his last run of films he makes, and then retire like George Lucas has. He's already been interviewed and said he has just bought farmland property in New Zealand where he plans to move with his family and 'farm off the land' of all things. Whether thats soon or in the future he hasn't said, but he has done a lot of the Avatar work in NZ, so it could be on the cards he will 'retire' soon.
Sadly the great days of Aliens and such are well behind him.
