No More Nick Fury for Samuel L. Jackson?

Source: LA Times

Samuel L. Jackson, who had a cameo as Nick Fury in Iron Man, told the LA Times that negotiations to return to the role in future Marvel Studios films have broken down. Jackson had the following to say:

"There was a huge kind of negotiation that broke down. I don't know. Maybe I won't be Nick Fury. Maybe somebody else will be Nick Fury or maybe Nick Fury won't be in it. There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world so [they're saying to me], 'We're not making that deal.'"

Geoff Boucher at the LA Times had this to say:

I called Marvel Comics and they gave me a statement that suggested that they still want to see Jackson wearing the eyepatch. "Marvel does not comment on active negotiations," was the boilerplate repsonse, but there was that emphasis on the word "active" in the voice of the spokesman who phoned me back.

Sam Jackson was a really poor choice anyways. Just because they based the Ultimate Nick Fury appearance on him, doesn't mean that he's right for the role. Switching him out for a better actor who suits the character would be a great idea, and the appearance change can easily be explained because Nick Fury has the kind of camouflage technology that can change his appearance to whatever he wants.

I'm more concerned about Marvel restricting Iron Man's budget, if that is why Sam Jackson isn't getting the role, when they KNOW that Iron Man 2 will be a huge success. They seem to be trying to get a little too hands on when it comes to the sequel. Where else are they going to make changes that might go against Jon Favreau's vision?

-n8 and Keitel:

The Rock predates Fury by about five years give or take a month or so. I wouldn't go so far as to Fury a rip off though as the hard ass NCO character has long been a stock character of film and fiction.

Also, although -n8 is correct about Jaunty Jim Steranko's stunning psychedelic art style it was Stan Lee and Jack Kirby who were responsible for re-imagining Fry as a cold warrior super-spy (and also for inventing SHIELD, as well as the Helicarrier and Life Model Decoys among other Fury tropes) in Strange Tales #131. Steranko didn't come on board for another twenty issues or so.

I will be fine with that.

Does this mean we get Hasselhoff back?

Between Howard/Cheadle, the loss of Jackson and the fact that there may be THREE villains and Iron Man fighting for the spotlight... my expectations for this are sinking faster than Jimmy Hoffa in the East River.

Aw, no way! Hopefully, this all works out and we DO get to see Jackson as Fury. He was the most obvious choice for that role.

Oh my god, first Howard and now Jackson? things arent looking that good for Ironman 2

I like how everyone doesn't care whether or not Jackson plays Fury and we instead segue into his characters origins.

Personally, I think Marvel needs to get its shit together just like Clown Baby said. I mean I think Don Cheadle is an amazing actor, but Terrance Howard looked the part. Not to mention the drastic difference in appearance between the two actors will take me out of the movie. And now you want to replace Sam Jackson because, and I quote, "There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world." so Jackson can't have a deal? I always thought DC Comics needed to get out more movies, but at least they are being smart about keeping them on hold so they can give us quality. Marvel Studios on the other hand seems to be run by the biggest douche bags in all of comics.
