Hey everyone,

I thought that enough time has passed since my last review that I should include my new Action film of the week. However on this occasion I decided to drift away from American films to the international action cinema due to all the hubub of Luc Besson's latest film in the states TAKEN and look back on one of his earlier pieces of work.

And today's action film is....

To review District 13 I have to give a quick explanation on the film's theme. For some of you who don't know what free running is, it's an urban sport invented in France by the youth living in the slums who use a form of urban acrobatics to get around the city quickly as possible without the use of vehicular transport. Basically these cool Frogs are able to jump from building to building like Spiderman. Now quite a few films have taken this urban sport but only for brief moments, examples are Casino Royale (Fun fact the black geezer being chased by Bond is Sébastien Foucan, the creator of this illustrious sport) and Die Hard 4, but only a few have constructed a story just on Free Running. This is one of those films...

District 13 is to Free Running (Or Parkour) what Fast and the Furious is to street racing. It's not met to have an intricate story plot or sympathetic characters but cracks on with showing the audience what they want to see which is the most extreme free running ever filmed for an action movie, that includes no wires, no CGI, just good old fashioned arse kicking action

Reminiscing on John Carpenter's Escape From New York, the film takes place in 2010 in the most dangerous gang ridden slum in Paris where The French government have decided to build a huge wall to seal off the criminals inside. We are introduced to District 13 through the eyes of two characters.
One is Leïto who as a civilian resident decides to wage a one man war on the drug lord Ta Ha and the other is local Parisan undercover copper Damien cleans up the streets outside the wall. When Taha steals nuclear war head from the goverment Damien and Leïto are forced to work together to save Paris from Arma - oh who gives a shit.I'll be honest with you, the acting and the script is shit. The only reason I recommend this is because the actions scenes are Amazingly well done. This film has kung fu, wild shootouts, a huge bodycount and of course the biggest reason to see it is the Free Running. For you action fans who are looking for something new, this the film for you.

One of the coolest chase scenes ever put onto the screen. Here we see Leïto being chased by Taha's soldiers and he decides to use the roof for means of escape.

Nice review Nick. I remember seeing this a while back, definitely felt refreshing to watch with the growing attention to parkour. I can't help but affiliate this film and any others that incorporate parkour with anything Jackie Chan has done in the past, being his own stuntman and all. ;P

The film was real cool, I especially like the Damien character (Cyril Raffaelli), he definitely comes across like the kind of actor that has more potential but he seems to be making a name for himself in action films behind the scenes. I was hyped to see him in this film after I remember first seeing him in that awesome fight as the high kicking twin in "Kiss of the Dragon".

Had this on DVD for ages. Bought it on the merit of a trailer I saw on something I rented. I wasnt dissapointed.

In the same vein as Taken, its not meant to be Oscar worthy but more to take something and exploit it. I found myself cursing out loud at some of the stunts these guys pull off. I like the buddy element of the film and like the lil twist at the end.

Gonna have to dig this out again me thinks. Merci beaucoup Monsieur Hodges :)

I really liked the thug boss in this. Actually all the characters were cool. It was B movie plot-wise, but really a lot of fun. Good review Nick.
