New Line Makes 'Y: The Last Man' Movie A Priority

For many years, over a decade in fact, there have been rumblings that the graphic novel 'Y: The Last Man' would be getting the big screen treatment. Yet somehow, nothing ever surfaced. Now it appears New Line, riding an enthusiastic reaction to the latest draft of the script by 'Jericho's Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia, has bumped the feature film version to their top priorities list. Brian K. Vaughn's dystopian graphic novel revolved around Yorick Brown and his pet monkey, the only two survivors of a spontaneous plague that killed every other being on Earth bearing a y-chromosome. New Line has begun the process of finding a new director for the film. D.J. Caruso ('Disturbia') was the last one attached, but departed the project two years ago. Again, this has been in development for a while.

Well, I guess it's finally time for me to prioritize 'Y: The Last Man' as well, and move it to the top of my ever-growing must read pile of graphic novels. Even without knowing the finite details, the central conceit alone is enough to pique my interest. I am a sucker for all manner of post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction and this particular cataclysm is fascinating. Of course, we've been fooled before by news of the 'Y: The Last Man' movie moving forward, but given that 'Jericho' was a show that was also about life after an apocalypse, it's not surprising Federman and Scaia were able to scribe something that got the studio excited enough to finally actually move forward. Obviously the director choice and casting of Yorick are vital components yet to fall into place. Is it too much to ask that someone like Neill Blomkamp ('District 9') gets the directing gig?

Who would you chose as director? As star? Any 'Y: The Last Man' fans care to give their input? What must the movie do to uphold the effectiveness of the graphic novel?

Wasn't Shia Labeouf attach to this on some point?

You think a world of crazy would let the last man on earth roam free?

I've read Y fairly recently. Given it's episodic nature (there are clear breaks between story lines) I think Y would work best as a limited series for television. Frankly, I'm a little surprised there aren't more TV adaptations of comic books given the periodical nature of comics, the top-notch budget and special effects for cable television shows, and the recent popularity of comic stories in the movies. These two media seems like a perfect marriage. Just look at the success of The Walking Dead.

@andres, At first glance you might think that but its not that simple. Think about it like this you are the last male on Earth from a deadly plague, essentially making you the worlds most valuable science project. Wars have been fought over less things, hell people die on Black Friday to get a 30 dollar discount on a TV.

@andres its a bit more... complicated than that. Once of the first things our "hero" Yorick sees is dead bodies and a police woman killing herself. He has a major guilt complex, and plus theres these women called the amazons which is a huge insane cult, and other countries trying to kidnap Yorick, plus cloning... you should read it.

@Dawnell_do

Drop dead, disappear, take a vacation, whatever! Point is, if I was that guy, I wouldn't be bitching bout a dystopia.....I'd be hitting up the bars and clubs every night ;)

@andres All the other males (humans and animals), don't just disappears. They drop dead from the plague living only Yorick Brown.

Let me get this plot straight.

Every other male in the planet disappears, leaving behind a world of emotionally fragile women desperate to repopulate the Earth?!?!

That is a goddamn Utopia!! Not Dystopia!!

I would rather it be a tv series.
