If you had one quarter for every video game that found its way to the big screen, you'd have enough coin to keep yourself very busy at the arcade. Well, to that ever growing list of games-to-films it looks like you can now add EA's 'Need for Speed.' Dreamworks is in talks to pick up the film rights to the racing game series, billed as the most successful game franchise in the world, which saw its first entry released in 1994. The story for the movie version of 'Need for Speed' is being developed by John and George Gatins (John having penned the screenplay for 'Real Steel' while George has produced films such as 'She's Out of My League'). While the deal is not finalized, more and more funding for this project is rolling in. The 'Need for Speed' movie does not currently have anyone lined up to direct nor a proposed start date for production.
The immediate thought I'm sure most of you are having is that the 'Need for Speed' games were not exactly heavy on plot. They may have slapped a backstory on you from time to time, but mainly these games exist to let players drive like maniacs and either run from police or pursue criminals as police (depending on which entry you played). So why make a movie based a game composed largely of free roam driving and smash-em-up races? While I agree that there is nothing inherently film-worthy about the 'Need for Speed' game series, I'm kind of a sucker for racing movies so I'm at least a little intrigued by this. My only hope is that they rely more on practical driving stunts as opposed to CG. I don't think any of us want an entire movie that looks like that awful cave race in 'Fast & Furious.' That's my feeling, what do you guys think?
Any die hard 'Need for Speed' fans out there think this could work? What are your concerns? Who would like to see direct?

Comment by Ash on April 17, 2012 at 5:31pm I know this won't be a popular statement, but with a movie that focuses on extreme underground car racing, only one name comes to mind, and that's Michael Bay. Love him or hate him, the car chase scenes he did in the Rock, Bad Boys 2, and the Island were Amazing. (Hell, the freeway scene in the first transformers at the end was really cool) And the man would do them entirely practical. Just saying.
Comment by SidMeister on April 17, 2012 at 4:19pm The screenplay for 'Real Steel' was HORRIBLE, it was poorly written and incoherent. although i love racing movies and games i'm not too hyped about this one. go watch Fast5
Comment by Silent Protagonist on April 17, 2012 at 4:06pm They alredy exist ,it is called "Fast and Furious"

Comment by The Viking on April 17, 2012 at 3:30pm this is going to be dropped when the writers start playing the game to check the story in it
Comment by Elvis on April 17, 2012 at 2:53pm Only way to go is absurdly over-the-top...
Comment by Wodenson on April 17, 2012 at 1:27pm Could this be a 21st Century Cannonball Run? They can't go into a Need for Speed movie wanting to be dark and serious and be successful at it.
Comment by DieHardAlien on April 17, 2012 at 1:25pm Justin Lin should direct this. He directed "Fast Five".
Comment by MAK2.0 (The Hybrid) on April 17, 2012 at 1:22pm As a kid, one of the first videogames I played is Need for Speed and ever since then, I always liked racing games. But why in the hell do we need a movie version of that? Isn't what The Fast and The Furious movies are for? Next thing, I'll be hearing of an SSX movie. Wonder what they'll called that? Too bad There Will Be Blood was taken.
