If you had one quarter for every video game that found its way to the big screen, you'd have enough coin to keep yourself very busy at the arcade. Well, to that ever growing list of games-to-films it looks like you can now add EA's 'Need for Speed.' Dreamworks is in talks to pick up the film rights to the racing game series, billed as the most successful game franchise in the world, which saw its first entry released in 1994. The story for the movie version of 'Need for Speed' is being developed by John and George Gatins (John having penned the screenplay for 'Real Steel' while George has produced films such as 'She's Out of My League'). While the deal is not finalized, more and more funding for this project is rolling in. The 'Need for Speed' movie does not currently have anyone lined up to direct nor a proposed start date for production.

The immediate thought I'm sure most of you are having is that the 'Need for Speed' games were not exactly heavy on plot. They may have slapped a backstory on you from time to time, but mainly these games exist to let players drive like maniacs and either run from police or pursue criminals as police (depending on which entry you played). So why make a movie based a game composed largely of free roam driving and smash-em-up races? While I agree that there is nothing inherently film-worthy about the 'Need for Speed' game series, I'm kind of a sucker for racing movies so I'm at least a little intrigued by this. My only hope is that they rely more on practical driving stunts as opposed to CG. I don't think any of us want an entire movie that looks like that awful cave race in 'Fast & Furious.' That's my feeling, what do you guys think?

Any die hard 'Need for Speed' fans out there think this could work? What are your concerns? Who would like to see direct?

Best ever driving sequence, Shelby getaway in "Gone in 60 Seconds."

Whoever the director is, I hope they can somehow capture the feel of driving at high speeds in the movie that we get in the games (except Carbon) without using CG. I'd also love to see a highway race or cop chase as a nod to Most Wanted and Hot Pursuit. I would've said that the storyline that went from Underground to Most Wanted to Carbon would've been cool to see, but that's basically what Fast & Furious has turned into.

@ AlexG8462, thank you! Thought the exact same thing when I heard this news, especially after playing the more street racing heavy installments in the series which themselves seemed to be inspired by the Fast series.

Whatever they do don't make it like Fast & Furious because they suck (especially the last one, way the fuck over the top with little to no racing). Use practical modded street cars, no expensive supercars (save your money). Of course, get some good stunt drivers and some very brave cameramen, no computerized crap. And most important, don't get too deep with the story, nobody is going to go out and see this movie to see a good story (based on the storyline in the games).

 Next thing, I'll be hearing of an SSX movie. Wonder what they'll called that?

@MAK2.0 (HybridMedia)

The remake of Ski Patrol or Aspen Extreme.

Now I get why they hired Michael Bay for NFS the Run Trailer. It was a kind of first shot.

We already have five Need for Speed movies, it's called The Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, and Fast Five.
