If it's crap... We'll tell you

The title just says it all. These are movies I believe, be they good or bad, that are overrated. Everyone who reads this should know that I only hate two of these films, so it is not a hate rant, as much as it may sound. Of course this is nothing but my opinion, so just remember this is my list not yours. I can deal with critism, but not hate mail.

I hope you guys like my second list.

10: Spirited Away

This might be a surprise to some people, but hear me out. I first saw this movie when I was about seventeen. I was starting to get into Miyazaki films. I had just seen Princess Mononoke the night before and this just did not meet the standards of his previous work. However, this film is held in higher regard than Princess Mononoke, which is one of my favorite movies. It might just be my taste in films, but that is why I believe this is overrated.

9: Across the Universe

Now I am a huge Beatles fan, so I did myself a favor and saw this. I was completey disappointed by the finished product. The first question I asked, after hearing the name of the characters, was "Do they sing Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds?" Of course if you have seen this you know they don't in the actual movie, but once the credits start they play the song. I just thought that this movie bitched way too much about the Vietnam War after forty years of it being over. I also loved, sarcasm, the cameo of Bono and there was no Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr what the hell is wrong with this film. I view this as being overrated by the fact that everyone I know loves it, even my father, who has been a Beatles fan since the sixties, loved it, yet I hated it. However, no matter how much I say I hate this film, you cannot listen to Let it Be and not be touched by the message.

8: Signs

I had a hard time deciding on which M. Night Shyamalan film to put. Really any of his movies could go on this list. I decided to chose this one because everyone still seems to view this film in high standing. I really believe that M. Night lost his twist ability after his first movie. I was just not impressed with this film because it was just too boring for my taste. I loved the Sixth Sense, so I was really excited to see this movie.

7: The Wicker Man (1973)

I did enjoy this film. However, it just did not live up to the hype I had heard before I saw this. I knew it would not be a "horror" film so that did not bother me. But the whole film seemed to drag on more than a detective film should. I did not see the twist the end held so the ending was rather disturbing to me. This is not the best film ever, but it was very good just not as good as it was made out to be.

6: The Ring (U.S.)

First off, I have never seen the Japanese version so I cannot compare them so I can only judge the American version. This film did transition to the U.S. very good. My sister saw this when it was first released in theaters and it completely scared her. So I was anticipating to this. I rented it one night and I was very creeped out by the atmosphere. I was sitting on the edge of my seat all the way til the end. The twist is what got me. I know it was to create a ring effect, people who have seen this know the ending, but did it have to be that stupid. If the ending had been better, this film wouldn't be so low, maybe not even on this list.

5: The Lion King

This has nothing to do with Carlyle's rant, but think about it. This is one of the big name Disney films that everyone seems to talk about, but no one really watches. It is a very nice film, but it is really overrated. It is not the best Disney film and I will not say which is the best Disney film. Out of the Disney films released in the 90's, this, and Pocahontas, are the most overrated and most different out of the ones made.

4: Forrest Gump

I do like this film, but everyone talks about this movie like it is the best movie ever made. I just think that everyone remembers this film because it won Tom Hanks the Oscar. I already commented on this film on my other blog, so read that and you can read my opinion about this film.

3: The Dark Knight

Fanboys calm down before you write me hate mail I have reasons. I love this movie, but this is another one of those movies that everyone claims to be the best film ever made. I have to say it is one of the better films made in a very long time. The acting was superb and the script was excellent. I just don't think it is the best movie ever made.
And people please stop saying "Why so Serious!?" I am sick of it.

2: Gone With the Wind

Another film that I love. I listed this as my #1 epic movie ever so I don't have anything to say about. Consult my other blog if you want to know my opinion on this film.

1: Star Wars Saga

This is my only hate rant so just bare with me, I will try to be fair with this one. I reason I chose the Star Wars films is that they are genre defining. However, I can easily think of three SciFi films that are better and more creative than all six Star Wars: Pitch Black, The Fifth Element, and Aliens. I never liked the Star Wars films. I just thought that these films were not that imaginative. I know these films caused SciFi to become more mainstream, but there are much better ones, and films that have not been rereleased over five times.

I hope everyone liked my list, and I know some people will hate it. Just remember I know there are other films that I haven't listed or seen.

I agree with Gone with the Wind, and that The Fifth Element was good (it's one of my favorite), but why Star Wars defines the genre is that in '77 it was like nothing else. All successful Sci fi movies today owe Star Wars everything because it was the first mainstream Sci fi movie opening the door for Aliens, Pitch Black, and the Fifth Element

I actually agree with most of these. I am just saying that if you rated something #1 then how can you complain that it's overrated. If you think Gone With The Wind is overrated then don't rate it your #1 epic movie ever, because then you yourself are overrating it. I am not trying to rip on you or anything, I would just be curious to hear your explanation.

I can agree with The Dark Knight even though I do like the movie sometimes I wonder if I was just caught up in the hype. I missed some of the calmer moments of reflection shown in Batman Begins which I thought was a little missing in The Dark Knight. Spirited Away is better than Princess Mononoke, it felt more emotional. personally I think Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is a little overrated.

Jurhead: Maybe I am, maybe I'm just a bitter moviegoer who hates certain movies, or maybe I do believe that Gone With the Wind is overrated. Just because I think it is overrated does not mean I hate it.

To everyone, calm down. It's my list. I can choose which ever movies I want to have on my lists.

I think you are just trying to get a rise out of everybody. If you really felt this way about some of these movies you would have put an explanation for some of the more popular movies. You think Gone With The Wind is the #1 epic movie ever but call it way overrated. Really?

You think Pitch Black and The fifth Element are both better than star wars?

Are you high, man?
