So there is this little movie called Iron Man 2 coming out... ever heard of it? No? Just me then. Ok.
The much hyped and (perhaps) overly so sequel has been out for 24 hours now. What was right with it? Alot. What was wrong with it? A little more then I expected. But I'm jumping ahead of myself.
Once again Robert Downey Jr shows us that he was born to play the role of Tony Stark. Lets face it the guy is flat out perfect in the way he plays up Stark's massive ego and playboy lifestyle. Stark really has fully embraced his superhero alter ego, and loves all the attention he gets because of it. He has " successfully privatized world peace" and wants the world to remember that.
Meanwhile Ivan Vanko the son of Tony's Father's Business Partner blames Stark for his family's misfortunes and goes after him after first creating a version of the arc reactor for himself. One thing I will say about Mickey Rourke is he plays Vanko with gusto. He's great in this flat out, but doesn't steal the movie.
Now to James Rhodes. There was a lot of hype over the changing of the guard between Howard and Cheadle for this. I like Cheadle alot but I was kind of disappointed at how little he gets to do in this film. When he comes out in the full on War Machine armor though, its a geeks dream. Lets hope he shows up in the " Avengers"
Now lets talk Black Widow. Scarlet Johansson is pretty good as Natasha Romanoff and gets a few great scenes to Kick serious Ass in. Including one with Happy Hogan ( Jon Favreau) that is pretty damn funny.
Iron Man 2 suffers the same fate that alot of sequels to highly popular movies ( and especially superhero movies) do. It tries to cram too much into itself. So much so that it kind of starts to loose its way about halfway through. It fortunately reels itself back in and gives us a killer third reel. The final battle is amazingly fast paced
and because of that I can forgive the little missteps. Maybe after a second viewing i may feel alot better about this movie. All in all, 4 and a half out of 5 Stars.
