My Little Pony: FIM review - Season 2, Episode 13 (Baby Cakes)

I'm back once again to talk about the ponies, and for the first time in what feels like forever, I have this up on the day the episode actually aired. Forgive my tardiness on the previous blogs, there seemed to be always something else to deal with back then, but with a free afternoon, I can get this one out on time.

The latest episode centres on Pinkie Pie, and wow, was it really Season 1 when that last happened? It's been a long time coming, but she has the spotlight once again for the new episode.  In this, we see Mr. and Mrs. Cake have two newborn babies, to the delight of everyone. Pinkie Pie relishes in the time having fun with them, being... well, the same way Pinkie Pie always is. But when it comes to finding a babysitter, Mr. and Mrs. Cake ask pretty much everyone else to take it on, because they don't see her as very responsible. Keeping the young foals entertained, yes, but they're not so sure about all the real duties that need to be undertaken.

Sadly, and very in-keeping with the classic babysitter tale, everypony else is busy, so reluctantly, they choose Pinkie to her delight.  Of course, almost immediately she discovers that taking care of two babies isn't as easy as it looks, and struggles to keep them in check. Leading to many entertaining moments of slip-ups and trouble for her.

And really, it's as simple as that for the most part, it doesn't deviate much from the classic telling of this story that you will have seen in many other kids shows. There are the problems with feeding, changing diapers, baths, and the occasions when the foals make a break for freedom. If this was any other show, it would be quite... plain. Great for kids to watch, but not so much so on levels of quality entertainment.

However, the thing here that makes this stand out is Pinkie Pie herself. Everything she does, her sense of fun and humour, the randomness that encases almost every scene, and her improb, is all great fun to watch. It's like when you see them performers balancing plates in magic shows, it's all very exciting, and you're expecting at any moment for everything to come crashing down in a mess of epic proportions. This is what makes Pinkie Pie's episodes so cool, it feels just like that.

The set pieces throughout are nice, especially one scene in the final third which even incorporates a Trainspotting reference. (and another one from a show I can't remember, if you watch it, you'll see it straight away) And it's great seeing the animators still shaking things up a little, even in a very safe, predictable story. It ends in the way you’d expect it to, but it's still rather sweet. For those seeking the Pinkie Pie song, it 'aint here sadly, but, there are a few short ones mixed in for good measure.

How to sum it up? Well, it was quite like last week's episode, where it was fun, but nothing exceptional that we've seen done before. However, that's not to say I didn't enjoy it, it was great almost all the way through. This was an episode made for the fans, especially those who love Pinkie Pie (and who doesn't?) If I was to recommend an episode to a new fan, it wouldn't be this one, but I would tell them to check this out once they've seen a couple others. It's simple and straightforward, but with that sense of joy that only Pinkie Pie can bring.

Thanks for reading! ^__^

Thanks Noodle. :) Yeah, at heart it's still a show for kids so they can't deviate too fare from a story they'll relate to, but this still managed to do a better take on the babysitter story than most other shows of this type. :)
