I really didn’t expect to do this so soon, but for Christ’s sake, it had to happen. And on Christmas Eve, no less. And the way it happened was just so… insulting.
Here’s the set up.
An elderly woman came up to the Box Office and asked for three adult tickets and two kids this morning. A strange but common thing that happens at my theatre is that the seniors don’t believe there’s ever a senior ticket in the morning, so they often ask for adult tickets. Well, I rang up two adults, two kids, and a senior ticket as it was cheaper than what she originally asked for.
No more than five minutes later, the elderly woman came back to the window saying I gave her the wrong tickets. I explained to her that I saw three adults and two kids but she qualified for a senior ticket. She told me she didn’t want a senior ticket. I asked her if she was not going to the movie. She told me she was, but she didn’t ask for a senior ticket and demanded it be changed.
Here’s where it gets insulting.
As I was about to tell her that the senior ticket is cheaper, she cuts me off and demand that I give her what she ordered because what I gave her was wrong. How wrong? The way she said it made it sound like that she wanted to pay more, yes, pay more because she thought that was the right thing to do. Most seniors would and have complained about being charged the normal adult ticket price and demand to have the lesser of the two.
But she wanted to pay more for her ticket. I was cutting her a break, and she wanted to pay more.
And what makes this act of holiday generosity even more insulting to me is that the woman clearly is so old she should have an assistant with her! Her head couldn’t stop shaking, her voice was so soft and scratchy I could barely understand her, and she clearly can’t see a thing in the daylight as it took her forever to find her coin purse the first time she was at my window! I’m no doctor, but clearly this woman has some form of Parkinson’s!
Fuck it. I tried to be nice, but I guess being generous at the movies is something nobody expects to happen in this age.
