If it's crap... We'll tell you

I just read Siriusly Black’s blog post about his favorite Bollywood movies, and I liked his list, except for Saawariya, cause it was only pretty looking, no good movie.

Almost all Bollywood movies have song and dance in them, the dancing a little less though lately (which is good I guess). But still this all is part of Bollywood, and that’s what the Indian audiences want so I don’t see any problem in it. It doesn’t distract me as long as the songs relate to the story and mood of the movie. And the producers make loads of money with the sales of the music albums of the movie, so I don’t think that the songs will disappear from Bollywood movies in the coming time. So if the songs bother you, don’t watch it. And people who say that Bollywood movies always follow a formula, haven’t been watching Bollywood movies lately, there is enough variety for everyone to find a film he or she will like.

Anyway, here are some of my favorite Bollywood movies, there are quite some I have to say and they are in no particular order. I have divided this post in two parts. This is part two.
And this is part 1: More Good Bollywood Movies - Part 2

(I have only taken movies released from 2000 and on, just to make it easier for me ;-)

So, here we go:

Swades (2004) – (Homeland)

A successful Indian scientist returns to an Indian village to take his nanny to America with him and in the process rediscovers his roots. This was also a movie that made me moist-eyed, cause it hade some real hard-hitting scenes in it. This is from the same director of the Oscar-nominated Lagaan and Jodhaa Akbar.

Paheli (2005) – (Riddle)

A folk tale - supernatural love story about a ghost who falls in love with a newlywed woman. This was a really good romantic movie and with some great performances. A movie with a ghost that is a lover.

Taare Zameen Par (2007) – (Stars on Earth)

An art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh teaches at a local boarding school and thinks that every child is special and must have his chance of enjoying his/her school days, so he breaks all the rules of 'how things are done' in the school to let his motives became successful, all the children respond to him with joy, all except a small boy named Ishaan Awasthi, of eight years old who seem to be in a different world all the time. Nikumbh soon finds out that Ishaan is unhappy about something. He attempts to help him. The questions remain will he be successful or will the errant prove dangerous for him. A very touching movie and I think that this is the movie that is the official entry from India to the Oscars. It’s directed by one of my favourite actors, Aamir Khan.

Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005)

Based on the life and times of Mangal Pandey, 1857: The Rising is a film about the leader of the 1857 mutiny and his fight against the British rule. A very interesting movie, some say that the resistance against the British started from Mangal Pandey. Aamir Khan, the actor who portrays Mangal actually grew his hair and moustache for this movie.

Life in a…Metro (2007)

Six different stories, about nine people, each with different issues and problems, all occurring within one place: the METRO, Mumbai. Normally I am not really into movies dealing with multiple stories, but this one I liked. And by the way, for the British folks, this movie has Shilpa Shetty in it, the winner of Big Brother.

Johnny Gaddaar (2007) – (Johnny Traitor)

In the story, five regular partners are going for a deal splitting profit five ways as usual. It is all fine until one of guys, Vikram wants it all for himself and plans to elope with his mistress. The plan could not be executed without problems and none of the members of the group is a rookie. In the movie, the viewer knows, at the very outset, who the actual traitor is, but his partners-in-crime don't. The protagonist finds himself forced to eliminate one member of the group after the other. Just when it seems that he is in the clear, there is a twist in the plot. Nicely executed movie with a great story to tell.

Chak De India (2007) – (Go For It India)

The story of a hockey player who returns to the game as a coach of a women's hockey team. A sports movie that worked big time in India. Sports movie which don’t deal with cricket aren’t made that much in India, and seeing that this is one movie that worked, I would recommend seeing this movie.

Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (2008) – (Whether You Know…Or Not)

Two best friends being convinced that they are not in love search for each other's love. This is a very very good movie; it’s one of my favorites. It’s vibrant and fresh, and just amazing! I guess it worked big time for me, cause it is meant for the youth, but everyone can watch this movie.

Parineeta (2005)

The film primarily revolves around the lead characters, Lolita and Shekhar. Since childhood, Shekhar and Lolita have been friends and slowly this friendship blossoms into love. A series of misunderstandings surface and both of them are separated with the conniving schemes of Shekhar's father. The plot deepens with the arrival of Girish who supports Lolita's family. Eventually, Shekhar's love defies his father's greed and he seeks Lolita.

Dor (2006) – (String)
The film is about two women who come from backgrounds and how fate brings them together. Meera a young woman who gets widowed immediately after her marriage, is plagued by tradition that takes away sheen from her cheerful self. Zeenat on the other hand, faces the daunting task of seeking the life of her husband without knowing where to begin from. The bahuroopiya helps her reach Meera, who holds the string to Zeenat's hope. The companionship that ensues between Meera and Zeenat results in redemption for both. A simple and touching story, with some great locations shown in the movie.

Ek Chalis Ki Last Local (2007) – (1:40’s Last Local)

A comic thriller about two people who miss the last local train at 1:40 am and how missing of their train changes their course of life forever. This was a movie with an unusual plot, but a good plot. I liked this movie and think the main protagonist, Abhay Deol, is a very competent actor.

Parzania – ‘Heaven and Hell on Earth’ (2007)

The film is inspired by the true story of 10 year old Parsi boy, Azhar Mody, known as Parzaan in the film, who disappeared during the communal riots in Gujarat, when a mob attacked the 'Gulbarg Society' in Ahmedabad, on 28th February, 2002. This is a personal favourite of mine and I found this movie to be very hard hitting and emotional.

Traffic Signal (2007)

Silsila is the "manager" of one traffic signal, that is he collects the "hafta" (protection tax) from each signal squatter plying his trade. There's Tsunami, a little scavenger boy, there's Rani - a Gujrati girl selling ethnic clothes on the sidewalk, and there's Dominic - a drug addict and the prostitute who feels for him. Then there's Silsila himself, who's an orphan, and reports to Jaffer bhai the local goon. Jaffer bhai in turn reports to Haji the leader of the local mafia. And the hafta, from each traffic signal and territory Haji controls, seeps upward to the politicians. Life is routine, until Silsila and Jaffer bhai get caught up in a chain of events which threatens the very source of their livelihood - the traffic signal itself, and Silsila must either remain mute with fear or protest. A realistic film that has a real story to tell.

Don - The Chase Begins Again (2006)

The Malaysian drug trade is run by Singhania and his right hand man, Don - a suave, cynical and dangerous man. Don kills gang member Ramesh who wanted to leave the gang. Ramesh's fiancée Kamini tries to get Don arrested but fails. Ramesh's sister Roma too is out for revenge. The Indian police are after Don and manage to capture him. A plan is hatched by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) DeSilva to train a street singer look-alike and send him back to Malaysia to infiltrate the gang and help the police. Roma has found a place within the gang and wants to kill Don. But nothing is as it seems, no one is to be believed. The story twists and turns and packs in surprise upon surprise before culminating in a gripping finale that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This is a remake of a 1978 film of the same name, and is definetly executed more better with some changes in the script.

Shaurya (2008) – (Courage)
The movie revolves around the court-martial of a Muslim officer, Javed Khan, in the Indian army for shooting his commanding officer and is set against the backdrop of the Kashmir Conflict in Northern India. Rahul Bose (Maj. Siddhant Chaudhary) is assigned to be Javed Khan's defense lawyer, and the story revolves around his investigations in the circumstances leading up to the shooting. A good movie with a superb climax.

Company (2002)

A fictional exposé of the Mumbai underworld. Mallik is a henchman of Aslam Bhai, a Mumbai underworld kingpin. He inducts local hothead Chandu into the gang, and the two of them soon form a formidable faction within the gang, eventually displacing Aslam. As the empire grows, however, the two of them start drifting apart. A great gangster movie with some hard hitting performances.

Veer-Zaara (2004)
Set against the backdrop of conflict between India and Pakistan, this star-crossed romance follows the unfortunate love story of an Indian officer, Veer Pratap Singh, and a Pakistani woman, Zaara Haayat Khan, who are separated for about twenty years. The story deepens with the arrival of Saamiya Siddiqui, a Pakistani lawyer, who finds Veer in prison, and upon listening to their story, tries to bring the lovers together. The Indian audience loves romantic movies and this is definitely one of the most successful one.

Dasvidaniya (2008)

Dasvidaniya is a story of Amar who leads a dull and boring life. He makes a daily-to-do list in order to escape his tiresome routine. He lives his life until one day he comes to know that he is suffering from stomach cancer. Then begins the journey of redemption, during which Amar discovers the true essence of life. This was a small movie and it really surprised me and won me over. It’s a great movie with a great message.

Iqbal (2005)
The story follows a cricket-obsessed deaf-mute boy from a remote Indian village as he aims to overcome his difficulties and become a cricketer and fulfill his dream of playing for the Indian national cricket team. A sweet and lovely story, with again great performances, from the kid to the old man.

Om Shanti Om (2007)

In the 1970s, Om, an aspiring actor, is murdered, but is immediately reincarnated into the present day. He attempts to discover the mystery of his demise and find Shanti, the love of his previous life. Now this is a movie that justifies the views that most non-Indian people have about Indian movies; loads of vibrant colors, songs, and dance (the movie is directed by a dance choreographer). This movie takes a dig at the way movie were made in the 70s, it’s a very commercial and formulated movie, but it works, at least for me. It was the highest grossing film that year.

I have to disagree with you on Don.

1978 version was waaaaaaaaaaaay better. I mean it's like if they were to remake Goodfellas without the famed actors. And the best scenes
