If it's crap... We'll tell you

I just read Siriusly Black’s blog post about his favorite Bollywood movies, and I liked his list, except for Saawariya, cause it was only pretty looking, no good movie.

Almost all Bollywood movies have song and dance in them, the dancing a little less though lately (which is good I guess). But still this all is part of Bollywood, and that’s what the Indian audiences want so I don’t see any problem in it. It doesn’t distract me as long as the songs relate to the story and mood of the movie. And the producers make loads of money with the sales of the music albums of the movie, so I don’t think that the songs will disappear from Bollywood movies in the coming time. So if the songs bother you, don’t watch it. And people who say that Bollywood movies always follow a formula, haven’t been watching Bollywood movies lately, there is enough variety for everyone to find a film he or she will like.

Anyway, here are some of my favorite Bollywood movies, there are quite some I have to say and they are in no particular order. I have divided this post in two parts. This is part one.
This is [art two: More Good Bollywood Movies - Part 2

(I have only taken movies released from 2000 and on, just to make it easier for me ;-)

So, here we go:

Devdas (2002) –

Set in the 30s, after his wealthy family prohibits him from marrying the woman he is in love with, Devdas Mukherjee's life spirals further and further out of control as he takes up alcohol and a life of vice to numb the pain. Alright so this is a movie directed by the same guy who directed the aforementioned Saawariya, and this is one movie I really liked. Great performances, lavish settings, and an interesting story.

Lagaan (2001) – (Land tax)

The people of a small village in Victorian India stake their future on a game of cricket against their ruthless British rulers. This was the movie that was nominated for the Oscars, it is a great movie and it has one of my favorite actors in it, Aamir Khan.

Tere Naam (2003) – (In Your Name)

A rough and macho college president, Radhey, who uses violence as the only way to deal with people, comes across a timid girl, Nirjara, who is the daughter of a poor temple priest, and starts to woo her. A wonderfully constructed sequence of events leads him to rescue her elder sister after she accidentally enters a brothel. When the girl falls in love with him, Radhey becomes a victim of brothel-goons and ends up in a mental institution with brain damage. The rest of the film dwells on whether Radhey and Nirjara are united. This was also a good movie, and had a very different and touching story.

Jodhaa Akbar (2008)

A sixteenth century love story about a marriage of alliance that gave birth to true love between a great Mughal emperor, Akbar, and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa. This is a movie by the same director of Lagaan, and it’s again a great movie, though it has a long running time, I still found a worthwhile to watch this.

Guru (2007) – (It’s a name, but it means person with great knowledge)

A villager, Gurukant Desai, arrives in Bombay 1958, and rises from its streets to become the GURU, the biggest tycoon in Indian history. Now this is a movie that I would recommend you to see, I found it to be very inspiring.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)

The movie shows in details how Bhagat Singh (a freedom fighter) came to develop his views of the British. The movie starts with scenes depicting how the British tried to dispose of the body of Bhagat Singh, so that he cannot be made into a martyr. Also a nice movie, next to Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh is also seen as a person that contributed to the freedom of India by the Indian people, so this is a very interesting movie to see.

Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) – (Gadar: A Love Story)

In 1947, Tara, a Sikh truck driver in Punjab, meets and falls in love with a wealthy Muslim girl named Sakina, by accident during anti-Muslim riots whom he saves, courts and marries. Years later, Sakina travels to Pakistan to visit her father, now the mayor of a small Pakistan city, for a visit where he tries to separate her and Tara and force her into an arranged marriage with a wealthy man of her age and religion. Also a very nice story and it shows that India and Pakistan can be lovers too, ha-ha.

Black (2005)

Debraj Sahay is a teacher to Michelle McNally who is both deaf & blind, he meets her as an eight year old, who doesn't understand anything. She is violent, confused and unable to comprehend her life. Her world is "BLACK". Debraj leads her from this darkness and confusion into light and hope, how he makes her discover her an identity, this makes her feel human rather than someone inferior with a disability. He is her teacher, her Guru, the one who leads her from darkness into light. A great movie! A must watch! Amitabh Bachan is a actor that has been around for a long time and man he delivers a great performance in this movie.

Munnabhai M.B.B.S (2003)

Murli Prasad Sharma is a local goon in Mumbai popularly known as 'Munna bhai'. He has kept his real
identity secret from his parents, who think that their son is a doctor. Munna's parents arrive in Mumbai for their annual visit and his father meets an old acquaintance Dr. Asthana by chance. They want to fix Munna's marriage with Dr. Asthana's daughter Suman "Chinky" Asthana. But Dr. Asthana comes to know about Munna's real identity, reveals it to his parents and humiliates them. Heartbroken, they leave for their hometown. Munna swears revenge upon Dr. Asthana and embarks upon getting an admission in a medical college to become a doctor. A predecessor of Lage Rago Munnabhai, it’s a great comedy and it has its touching moments as well.

Rang De Basanti (2006) – (Paint It Saffron) – Saffron is a color associated with freedom in India

The film begins with a British documentary filmmaker who is determined to make a film on Indian freedom fighters based on diary entries by her grandfather (a former officer of the British Army in India). She requests a group of youngsters, who are indifferent to the state of affairs in India, to act in her film. After they agree and begin filming, a dear friend's death in a aircraft crash is attributed to government corruption. This event metamorphosizes them into passion-driven individuals who are determined to avenge his death. This is one of my favorite movies and was really thought provoking.

Gandhi, My Father (2007)

The troubled life of Harilal Gandhi, son of Mahatma Gandhi brought to the limelight. The movie describes the failure of Gandhi as a father and Harilal overpowered by the burden of being the son of a celebrated parent. Now this is a movie that puts Mahatma Gandhi in a different spotlight. And by the way, this movie was produced by Anil Kaporr, who is part of the cast of Slumdog Millionaire as the host of the Who Wants to be a Millionaire show.

Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007)

Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Aftab Ahmed Khan Head of the ATS attacked the Lokhandwala Complex on November 16, 1991, with a force of around 100 armed Policemen. Dreaded gangster Maya Dolas was hiding in the complex. This is a nice (Indian) gangster movie and has some really good performances.

Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) – (Tomorrow May Never Come)

Naina is a very serious girl with a very serious life. But one day, her soul is awakened by the happy-go-lucky Aman, who teaches her that life is meant to be lived. Naturally, she falls in love with him. But Aman is harboring a secret that keeps him from reciprocating Naina's love. But he cannot stand having her live a life without love, so he sets off on a mission to fill her life with someone else's love - someone she already knows.... This is one of those rare movies that made me actually cry, so if you like emotional and romantic movies, this is another must-watch.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001) – (The Heart Wants)

Three young men Akash, Sameer, and Siddharth are close friends, but their tastes and characters are completely incompatible. So when Siddharth falls in love with a much older woman, Tara, a woman who has been unsuccessful in keeping her marriage intact as well as alcohol-dependent, widens the rift between the trio, forcing them to part company. Years later, the trio will be re-united, they will be much mature and understanding, but will they still accept Siddharth love for Tara, especially when they themselves have fallen in love with women around their respective ages. A very nice movie and close to my heart.

Rock On!! (2008)

Rock On!! is the story of 4 friends who put together the greatest band this country has ever seen, but never make it. Years later fate conspires to bring them together again and set them on a journey back to where they left off... a soul-searching into their past. Now this movie stars and is produced by the director of the movie ‘Dil Chahta Hai’. It’s another great movie which very nice songs, songs that the non-Indian audience may like as well.

Lucky: No Time for Love (2005)

An unforgettable journey of two persons who don’t know each other, from highways and moldy cemeteries to abandoned theaters and icy snowdrifts. A journey where violence and tragedy stalk them constantly and where there is little time for talk and survival comes only from being constantly at guard. As they march through savage ambushes and the icy wilderness of a foreign land, they discover the limits of their endurance, and more importantly love. This one is a nice romantic movie.

Koi… Mil Gaya (2003) – (I Found Someone)

A developmentally disabled young man tries to continue the work his father did in communicating with extra-terrestrials from outer space, which leads to something miraculous and wonderful. This is I guess Bollywood’s answer to E.T. It is a nice and fun movie to watch, and it has its fair share of Indian sentiments.

Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008)

Inspired by the incredible true story of Lucky Singh, an extremely charismatic and fearless confident man and thief who socialized with the rich, famous and influential of Delhi society and then proceeded to rob them blind. He was the bête noire of the police and had stolen millions by the time he was caught. A modern day Robin Hood with a twist, he robbed both the rich and the poor without prejudice. Nothing was too big nor was anything too insignificant to escape his attention. Along the way he makes lifelong friends, falls in love an manages to outwit the entire law and order machinery. This is a small but still a great movie, and is one of my personal favourite movies.

Black Friday (2004)

Black Friday is a film about the investigations following the 1993 serial Bombay bomb blasts, told through the different stories of the people involved --police, conspirators, victims, middlemen. This movie is a real and dark movie and a well made movie. This is not your average feel good Bollywood movie, but a hard hitting movie.

A Wednesday (2008)

A man calls up the Mumbai police n tells them he has placed 5 different bombs in the city all set to go off in some time - he wants four terrorists in return. Does he get them? Who is behind it all? Whats the motive? Is there more than meets the eye? I am not gonna tell much about this thriller, cause else I will spoil it for those who will want to see this one. A little clue though, this movie is a kind of answer to the Friday bombings.
