It was another boring Wednesday when I get a call from my friend who said that he had tickets to go see Monsters Vs. Aliens. My Reaction was this movie might be mediocre because with the exception of Shrek and Kung Fu Panda, I am not a big fan of Dreamworks Animated movies. So when I found out that this movie wasn't coming out until the end of the month I realized I might as well see it like everyone else who may have gotten a pass. The movie starts up and when it is over all I can say is this movie is almost equal to Kung Fu Panda, it turned out to be witty, action packed, and more importantly the characters were very likable along with the fact that these are MONSTERS we are talking about. Now to get to the meat of this review, the story is pretty much if this was the love child of a b-monster and alien movie since the beginning of the movie starts with Susan (Reese Witherspoon) turning into the reincarnation of the 20,000 ft. amazon woman named Ginormica (very subtle :0) .

She meets other characters like the Missing Link (Will Arnet) basically the Sea Monster, one of my favorite animated characters B.O.B (Seth Rogan) who is by far the dumbest monsters who have ever known but he is still so damn likable and finally Dr. Cockroach Ph.D (Hugh Laurie, yes the guy who plays the self entitled House) is every mad scientist cliche down to the mad laughter except for being a cockroach. These MONSTERS are being contained from the world by the U.S. government until an alien named Gallaxher (Rainn Williams) finds that a rare material is found on earth and after a short moment of humans wanting peace, the alien starts to wreck havoc on earth so the government decide to use monsters to combat the threat. The story overall is basically a cut and paste typical monster disaster movie but what makes this movie work on its own merits is not the jokes but the characters are so fleshed out and have their own Quirks that that make them very likable despite that fact that they are MONSTERS! (I have to do that every 2 seconds).

Now we can finally talk about the main parts of Monsters Vs. Aliens that makes the whole thing come to life starting with how the animation is through out the whole movie and lets just say that while I have seen better it is the art style and character design that make the whole piece fit perfectly with the type of films it parodies off on. The vibe of the movies is basically a monster movie so you have to have that sorta of 50's typical monster movie feel to the whole experience and it just does that by following every cliche in the book but for this movie that was what it was going for in the first place. From the music (which is amazing and fits perfectly with the theme of the movie) to overall style of the Monsters vs. Aliens, this is one stylish movie from directors Ron Letterman (Shark Tales...ugh) and Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2...Yay!) that kind of makes up for doing some really not so good animated films.
To put it to ya this way, this is going to be one of those movies that you should take your friends to and just have a blast at the theaters. Monsters Vs. Aliens is one of the few movies that actually works very effectively if you watch this when it comes out with a whole bunch of people just having good time instead of the little movie that is not so much for kids call Watchmen (I not saying it is a bad movie....yet but that this movie is very much what you should take your kids to see). I thought some of the pop culture references (don't worry I won't spoil the fun they are funny) were really corny and also out a place proving to me that they work sometimes and then it is just embarrassing to see something like Beverly Hills Cop's score being play by the President (Stephen Colbert).....DOH!

I saw this in 3-D Intru and found it to be very gimmick but it fits with the setting of the movie and can be enjoy more thoroughly than in a regular theater. So overall it is the characters along with their personality and witty dialogue that makes this movie stand from your average animated movie even if it is predictable.
For Fans of Monster and Aliens film, (it helps because most of the joke are easier to understand since this is one big tribute to those b-horror movies) FULL PRICE!!!
But for those that are just looking for a good animated movie until that next Pixar Classic then this is a
MATINEE!
So I hope this review made you a little less worry about how Monsters Vs. Aliens was going to turn out along with changing a few of your minds on this movie. Stay tuned this Saturday or Sunday for my Review of Watchmen.
until then I have one thing to say, MONSTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S.-If you want to know where you can get advance screenings of movies before they are released, you can find a group on facebook called NYC Movie Screenings and join the group to randomly be selected to see movies a few weeks in an advance before anyone else see it. Also, if you want a photo of the stub (someone pointed it out that it looks cheap but so is the country....no pun intended :p ) just message me and I will send it to ya to comment on it.
P.S. 2-I will do my best to describe the beginning of the film, it starts with Susan about to get married to Derrick (Paul Rudd) who is self absorbed with his job as a weatherman for a local new studio in Madusdo, Texas(Sorry if I spelled the name of the town wrong) one of those small towns when all of a sudden a meteorite hits Susan right on top of her. That is when she turns into Ginormica which is (see above answers). From that point on she is capture by the General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland....yup 24) and put in a facility where they hold monsters from ever being a threat to the world. If you want more of the plot you can go to (http://my.spill.com/profiles/blogs/update-on-future-plans-and) to read up a plot summary of the movie with some of the jokes outlined from the movie.
For more info on the plot, check my other blogs for specific plot details and jokes which are more monster related than pop culture references (which i hate by other people like it so i can't complain). So that's my last update for now, Later!
