To say that Minecraft is the best selling game in Xbox Live Arcade's history is kind of an understatement. The game came out in May of 2012 for Xbox 360 and has been in the top selling games for Xbox's digital sales ever since, even selling nearly half a million copies on Christmas Eve alone. So it should come as a surprise to no one that when Microsoft's exclusivity contract with Mojang ends they plan on bringing the game to Sony's Playstation. Jens Bergensten, the lead designer for Minecraft Pocket Edition, has said, "When it runs out we’ll consider Minecraft for PlayStation, but Wii U is very unlikely.”

Playstation owners rejoice! Presumably sometime this year you may be able to pop onto the PSN to see what all this Minecraft fuss has been about. Mojang will probably follow the same route they took with the launch for Xbox where they initially release a vanilla version of the game and over time update it to become more and more akin to its' PC counterpart. The sad bit to come out of this revolves around the second half of Bergensten's statement. Really no port for the Wii U? Nintendo made such a big deal about how the their new console was just as powerful if not more than the 360 and PS3 so processing power can't be the issue. Also the Wii U game-pad seems perfect for Minecraft integration as you could just put the entire crafting (and later brewing) menu right on the pad itself. Maybe the problem isn't on Mojang's side however and Nintendo just doesn't spend any money developing anything that isn't a sure fire hit.

Will you buy Minecraft if it does come to the PSN? Any Wii U owners put off by this prospect? Let your thoughts be known in the comments below.

If it is an issue from the Nintendo side, the only guess I have is that they plan on releasing a game for the WiiU (maybe Animal Crossing) that, while not close to gameplay, may seem to compete with Minecraft in some form and simply don't want to run the risk. Even then it's not really a good reason, or perhaps Nintendo is trying to focus on having third-parties release new/unreleased games on the WiiU rather than games that have been out for a while (not really a strong selling point after all)

Will I get it for the PS3? Depends. If it's compatible with both the PS3 and PS4 then definitely, since I'd have nothing to lose. If there are two different versions of the game for some reason, I'd wait a bit to see what's the better investment.

Swing and a miss, Nintendo. Swing and a miss.
