"I'll be back... twice." Straight from the Cannes Film Festival, we have the announcement that producer/financier Megan Ellison ('True Grit') has won the high-profile auction and walked away with the rights to produce two or more new films in the 'Terminator' saga. Purchased for an undisclosed sum (thought to be upwards in the $20+ million range), and featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and 'Fast Five' director Justin Lin (both of whom previously signed onto the development package), the next two installments in the franchise will likely be put into production as soon as possible.
Ellison - the daughter or Oracle founder Larry Ellison, and sister of Paramount-based Skydance producer David Ellison - has been in the news a lot lately with her untitled Osama Bin Laden project (helmed by 'The Hurt Locker' director Katheryn Bigelow) being once again pushed into the forefront of production as the team of Navy SEALs it followed ended up being the very team that finally tracked Bin Laden down. With that project being such a hot-ticket item in Hollywood right now and the acquisition of the 'Terminator' franchise, the next few years could be very profitable for Ellison.
So there you have it - we're going to get two or possibly even three more 'Terminator' films (you know how Hollywood loves a trilogy) starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in some capacity. As there is no screenwriter attached, there literally is no end to the possibilities for the franchise. Perhaps they'll try to once again milk the time travel aspect of the series? Perhaps they'll try to salvage the wreck of 'Salvation' and set it post-Judgment Day? Could they pull of a 'Terminator' series that doesn't revolve around the Connor family? Maybe (as suggested by many fans) they'll make Arnold the lead actor and have the series revolve around the man who eventually became the template for the Terminators (because it's been well established that the events in 'T3: Rise of the Machines' and "Sgt. William Candy" are non-canon). I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Even have a three completely ruined the entire point of the first two.

No, what I was saying was if, hypothetically, some other guy was John Connors father and if the timeline were changed than there could be a future where the war never happened and no-one was sent back in time, almost like in the Back to the Future movies where the timeline was modified several times over the course of the three films. Of course the idea only makes sense if Kyle Reese isn't John Conner's father, if he is (as the movies have said) then of course the future can be slightly altered but never fully changed as judgemen day needs to happen so that Reese will eventually be sent back in time on his mission and become Connor's father!
Of course we've never seen a newspaper headline change Back to the Future style in the Terminator movies so of course it doesn't function with the same rules, I was just thinking a "what if" scenario out loud!

Dude, that is a good point, I hadn't thought of that!
If Kyle Reese wasn't Jon Connor's papa then the timeline could change again Back to the Future style! Maybe they could reboot it Star Trek (2009) style? Who knows what the future will bring, pun intended!
