According to The Hollywood Reporter, James McAvoy has signed on to play a young Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class, which Matthew Vaughn is directing for Fox.

X-Men: First Class will chart the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

Fox is planning a summer start for the film, which currently has a June 3rd, 2011, release date.

This film actually has potential, but I still need to see a trailer before I can tell whether or not it's headed in a good direction. But remember everyone Matthew Vaughn was originally signed on to direct X-Men 3, but dropped out at the last minute. Lets hope the same doesn't happen here.

Matthew Vaughn?? He probably is a big comic book nerd with stuff like Stardust and Kick-Ass out, but why sign on a dead franchise, dead movie franchise that is, same goes to McAvoy, now I could be totally wrong and the script might be great, but still man.... Hit girl ain't gettin' any younger, by the time they start production on Kick-Ass 2 and that is if it is going to happen, they'll need atleast 2 years.... , that would mean that she'll be 15, I don't think a 15-year-old can fit in that suit, and we all know Hit girl ain't replaceable, the character going to be a cult icon, T-shirts etc etc.... yeah... guess no hope for a Kick-Ass sequel.

Coolio, I'm cool with this, though he looks too much of a bad ass/ ladies man, to be Professor X. I'm looking forward to it, and I hope they don't hype this film up, let the movie speak for itself.

Yes, it is FOX, the assholes that made X3 and Wolverine, but also the assholes that made X1 and X2.

McVoy strikes more of a Magneto, than a Xavier. With Vaughn and McVoy, Magneto shall be a brit as well

I'm excited about Vaughn and McAvoy, but we have to remember; this is FOX we're talking about. They'll probably add a teen Wolverine to appeal to teen girls and ignore the continuity of Wolverine's non-ageing.

Sounds awesome especially with someone as good as McAvoy
