If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Joe and Anthony Russo are getting rolling on 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier,' the sequel to 2011's 'Captain America: The First Avenger.' Chris Evans will return as super soldier supreme Steve Rogers and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow will be making the crossover into Cap territory. Still up for grabs is the romantic female lead. Recently a laundry list of capable actresses was announced as being in the running for the role of the love interest, believed to be Peggy Carter's niece Sharon. This list included the likes of Emilia Clarke ('Game of Thrones') and Alison Brie ('Community'). Now it appears Mary Elizabeth Winstead may be in consideration for the part as well**. There are also a couple of highly coveted male roles still to be cast, the specifics of which are being kept under wraps. The top candidates right now appear to be Josh Holloway ('Lost') and Nikolaj Coster Waldau ('Game of Thrones.')
First things first, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an absolute doll, and one of my favorite people to watch on screen. I think she's got talent for days, and I'm happy to hear her name in this conversation. That said, I'm not entirely convinced she's the right choice for the part. If it is indeed Sharon Carter that Marvel is looking to cast, my fear is that MEW is just not rough and tumble enough to play an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. I've been wrong plenty of times before, and I would love it if I am being shortsighted here because it would mean seeing Mary Elizabeth Winsted in a Marvel movie, but it is a concern for me. As to the male roles, one of which I can only assume has to be a secondary villain, I think they're eying some phenomenal talent. Holloway was great on 'Lost,' and proved he could be a powerful screen presence in his, admittedly brief, role in 'Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol.' Meanwhile Waldau is sinisterly brilliant as Jaime Lannister on 'GoT' and was a wickedly clever villain in the spectacular 'Headhunters.' We know Sebastian Stan is returning as Bucky Barnes (aka The Winter Soldier) so it's possible that at least one of the remaining male roles is that of General Vasily Karpov. If that's the case, I think Waldau has the edge.
What do you guys think? Would Mary Elizabeth Winstead make a good Sharon Carter? Would Josh Holloway and/or Nikolaj Coster Waldau make suitable additions to the cast?
**Update: Mary Elizabeth Winstead posted via Twitter, "Internet rumors can be fun, but unfortunately they are often also very untrue." Not an outright denial, but it could indicate that she's not actually auditioning for 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' after all.

Comment by Todd A. on October 17, 2012 at 10:19am I can't see Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Sharon Carter, and I'm still holding out hope that she will be cast as Mary Jane Watson in the next Spidey film.

Comment by Bryan K on October 17, 2012 at 5:51am I would love to see Holloway as Green Arrow, but honestly, I'll be glad to see him as any superhero. As for Winstead, I'd say maybe she could do it. Then again, I didn't think Evans would be a good Cap, and he is perfect.

If they were looking for people that matched the physical criteria perfectly, they would have never casted RDJ (he's like half a foot shorter than comic Stark) and we wouldn't be here right now.
Comment by Boatloads1017 on October 17, 2012 at 12:09am That's too bad. There is entirely too little Mary Elizabeth Winstead in movies.
