Marvel Moving Ahead With Guardians Of The Galaxy Movie?
The parade of Marvel property movie announcements continues today with word that they may be prepping a big screen version of The Guardians of the Galaxy. First published in 1969, and taking place in the 31st century, The Guardians are comprised of powerful beings from various planets, and one Earth astronaut who traveled in suspended animation for one thousand years. They join forces to battle the evil alien Badoon. The team was rebooted in 2008 with all new members including Adam Warlock and Rocket Raccoon. Rumor has it the Guardians of the Galaxy movie has been fast-tracked for a May 2014 release. Apparently a script is already in place for the film, written by Nicole Perlman, which the studio is quite happy with. As of now, no directors have been named as being in contention for the job.
Ok seriously, is it just me, or is Marvel still scrapping the bottom of the barrel here? As I've mentioned before, I am slowly acclimating myself to more and more comic books so I am about one hundred miles away from being called an expert, but there are plenty of characters I've never read who I've at least heard mentioned now and then. The Guardians of the Galaxy is another property, like The Human Fly, that is completely foreign to me. I imagine Marvel's thinking here was to churn out another superhero team as quickly as possible to capitalize on the success of 'The Avengers,' but I feel they need to be careful with this one. Reading info on the 2008 reboot of the Guardians, it's hard not to dwell on the fact that the team boasts a space raccoon and a telepathic dog. Let's just say that if they really are committed to doing a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, I pray it's the classic lineup.
What do you guys think? Any Guardians of the Galaxy fans out there? Could this movie work? If so, how?

Agreed, they've got balls. I really hope that this property is successful.
Marvel have been doing pretty damn well with their movie franchises recently. Hopefully another notch in the belt.

Brian, I think you need a sit-down with a LEOG and get a history of comics. I understand this really isn't your field of knowledge, but here at Spill, we fans usually DO know these characters. It may be to your benefit to get a bit of learning on it.
I'm more knowledgable myself on the futuristic original team than the new version. Oddly, you'll need more backstpry to explain the new team than the old, as the old team has the same common origin. It would be easier to write the old team, but the new one is far more popular.
That said...fuckin' A! This isn't the bottom of the barrel, folks...otherwise we'd have Shamrock or Leap Frog or gods help us Forbush Man movies. Marvel has hundreds of potential titles to pull from, and if they stick to the One Marvel Universe concept, this could be a lot of fun. Wonder if Killraven is next...

I've never read either versions of the GotG comics but I did read a lot of the Warlock/Infinity Watch comics that Jim Starlin did in the 70s and then around the time of Infinity Gauntlet in the early 90s. If they base the movie on that stuff, then it should be golden.
The problem with Thanos' backstory is that it happens far away in space and all that. Trying to shoe horn his origin into one of the present character's films could wreck it.
However, I actually wouldn't make Thanos the main villain of the Guardians movie. I'd make it Magus, the evil alter-ego of Warlock. Thanos' origin can be told there, but don't give that battle away yet - have him creep through the entire series of MCU films, until he defeats Warlock and co. in GotG 2 and gains all of the Infinity gems, leading into Avengers 3, which would basically be 'the Infinity Gauntlet' story.
Perhaps have him drop into Asgard to defeat them, while Thor is stuck on earth or something in Thor 3, as the final lead-in to Avengers 3. Lots you could do with this, but Thanos really ought to be epic.

Just equip each of the Guardians with an infinity gem and have Thanos take them down one by one. It will be like watching fucking Kratos manhandhandling gods in God of War.

Was a huge fan of the rebooted title. Cannot wait to see if they can pull this off!
