As Sony puts together its sequel to this summer's 'Amazing Spider-Man,' the roster of new faces coming aboard is shaping up to be quite impressive. We've got Shailene Woodley ('The Descendants') coming on as Mary Jane Watson, Dane DeHaan ('Chronicle') taking on the role of Harry Osborn, and the villainous Electro to be played by Jamie Foxx ('Django Unchained'). The most recent piece of casting news however pertains to an actor from the first film returning for part two, and an unexpected return at that. Martin Sheen will evidently be reprising his role as Peter's Uncle Ben. Here's what he let slip during a recent appearance on an Irish talk show...
"They've called me back, I don't know what the part is gonna be, but I'm going to be 'Uncle Ben' once again in Spider-Man next year. We shoot it in February."
Warning: 'Amazing Spider-Man' Spoilers To Follow
Obviously what makes this an unexpected move by Sony is that Uncle Ben was murdered in the first movie, much as he was in Raimi's 'Spider-Man'AND the comics. So I suppose the spoiler warning was a bit unnecessary. The fact that he's dead in no way precludes him from being in the sequel of course. They could construct any number of flashbacks or other playful narrative timelines to work him back into the story. That's the thing about comic books, no one is ever really dead, are they? The reason this story strikes me is not Uncle Ben's return from the grave, but what that may represent in terms of overarching themes. One of the things that bugs me about how Spider-Man has been handled cinematically up to now is that his origin story is revisited and rehashed ad nauseam despite the fact that he has possibly the most basic origin imaginable: spider...bites man...Spider-Man. And as to the Uncle Ben motivation, that theme has underscored pretty much every Spider-Man film up to this point as to be white noise. I think the less they revisit this the more they sidestep the trap of being totally redundant.
What do you guys think? Do we another Uncle Ben appearance? Is this the wrong move for the franchise?

@nerdilicouse?! - That's because the film isn't based on Ultimate Spider-Man. I mean, they might have used the heavier sci fi bits as inspiration, but the rest of the film is just a straightforward adaptation of the early comics.
Comment by Jon Riddle on December 11, 2012 at 11:48pm Sounds like Sheen will be on hand for flashbacks concerning the mysterious lives of Richard and Mary Parker -- which these new movies seem to think is their hook to keep audiences attending sequels.
What they don't realize is that the hook that keeps us watching Spider-Man movies is that Spider-Man happens to be in them.
Comment by taylor michael on December 11, 2012 at 11:46pm like others have stated..it will be flashbacks..as for the first movie..it was ok but it doesnt really have replay value with me and did have its issues and not to mention some plot lines in the movie that were left alone or ignored once introduced
Comment by Eric Turpel on December 11, 2012 at 5:03pm Completely for it.

Comment by Brinkman on December 11, 2012 at 12:52pm nerdilicouse?! is there a reason you made your text specifically hard to read?
Comment by HenroTee on December 11, 2012 at 11:35am I really liked amazing spiderman, but Uncle Ben did some stupid shit to get him killed.
Gonna be flashback to where Uncle Bens talking to Petes dad. Whatever. I almost fell asleep during the first one, no joking.
Comment by nerdilicouse?! on December 11, 2012 at 9:16am I have read ALL of Ultimate Spider-Man and everyone says that is where these main stories are coming from... I just don’t see it, I don’t mean to be negative but if you’re going to do Spider-Man, he should be a geeky nerd, not some elusive D bag that has the Footloose Loner complex going on. I LOVED Ultimate Spider-Man and I honestly just don’t feel good about this.
I apologize to everyone that loved the first film because I really don’t want to talk trash on something that is truly epic for someone else. I have those movies that everyone else talks trash on and it’s like "man, how can you not see the awesome-ness of this?!?!?!!?!" I just don’t see how this Spider-man version is good, I am NOT saying Raimi's was better cause his part three made me so freaking angry. I am just saying when I read the comic and then I watch that first movie, there is just no similarities for me.
This movie is going to be so epic! I love all Webb's casting decisions so far.
